PROGRESS IN THE RIGHT DI
RECTION, It is an encouraging sign to those
who have the welfare of humanity
at heart to know that in the con
trol of state and county fairs
measures are being adopted looking
to permanent reform and a better
state of affairs. We have refer
ence to the suppression of gam
bling outfits and drinking booths.
We are informed that rigorous
measures were adoptedfat the re
cent state fair to that end. Not
only is that the fact in this state,
but it seems to have become a
universal action in the different
states of the union. The Husband
man savs of the New York fair
-
that "Very plainly agricultural ;
and mechanical fairs are higher in
tone than in past years. Their
managers no longer look with
favor upon practices offensive to
the moral sense, as, for example,
attendant dram-selling and the
many gambling devices that in
former years led the unwary from
sober honesty to evil-doing. This
gain is pleasing, for it is in line
with happy progress that marks
the age. Where there was db or
der and vice there is now good
order fiTKhvirtue, sobriety in place
of drunkenness, good influence in
stead of allureinents to crime. The
change hasn jt been brought bylaw
but improved moral sentiment tnat
is greatly encouraged by ready ac
quiescence on the part of fair mai --agers
in every movement that has
for its object more careful obser
vance of all proprieties. In its
high character the New York state
agricultural society may weli be
accepted as an example worthy of
emulation. Be it remembe.ed
that this society shut liquors off
from its grounds, not at the' de
mand of law, but by choice of
(good instead of evil. It was ready
'to respond favorably when the
New York state grange nearly two
years ago asked that it surrender a
privilege that had brought to its
coffers more than a thousand dol
lars in a single fair with not a cent
of outlay. It was in sympathy
with progress as it isow,fa co
adjutor in the temperance work of j
the times, a voluntary aid in every
movement toward cleaner fairs,
and, therefore, deserving of most
cordial approval."
It is certainly a matter of congra
tulation that such satisfactory pre
gress is being made in that direc
tion, and it is to be hoped that the
people will unite in extending the
work as rapidly as possibly by
giving it all the aid and counten
ance they can.
