The Willamette Packing Co.
shipped two more car loads of fruit
ye.-terday to Portland. They are
now canning tomatoes and finish
ing their pack of blackberries.
They are supplying large quanti
ties of fruit to the railroad con
tractors. They have received at
their store on Second street a large
invoice of fresh groceries, hams,
bacon, etc. Their fruit pack is un
excelled, and is much preferred by
dealers to the California product.

A young business man of this
city drove over to Corvailis Sunday
to see relatives and on his return
siiot a Chinese pheasant on the
farm of Rube Kiger. The latter
overtook the buggy and stopped
the occupants on the road and
went through the contents an I
found the bird. He then informed
the authorities, and yesterday' the
Albany gentleman went up to Cor
vailis and paid his fine of $50.
He is of course very ireful and
threatens to have Kiger arrested
f -r soing through his buggy on the
highway.

cently burned near this city, was
paid yesterday by the tanners
and Merchant's Ins Co., of Albany
The insurance ou the house was
adjusted yesterday by W. S. White,
the Hartford's agent, and after the
usual delay it may be paid. The
moral is obvious : Insure in the
home company.

Pacific coast towns have ex
perienced an unusual number of
incendiarv fires recently. The last
is a $0000 fire at Jacksonville. It
broke out in I). Linn's wagon
factory and destroyed $0l)0 worth
of lumber, material, etc., also the
residences of W. J. Plymale and
N. Fisher and cuused ome minor
lo-ses. There was no insurance
ou any of the property burned.

The Northern Pacific Railroad
Company has purchased the entire
system of the Cu-ur d'Alene Rail
way it Navigation Company, com
prising a number of steamers
which ply on Lake Cu-ur d'Alene
and Cu-ur d'Alene river, as well as
twenty-eight miles of narrow gauge
railway extending from Cu-ur-d'Alene
mission through the min
ing region of that name. The
newly acquired property gives the
Northern Pacific an all rail connec
tion with Pmret Sound, and the
mines of Idaho Territory. The
narrow gauge will be w idened to a
standard gauge. The Cteur d'Alene
Company pays 2 per cent quarterly
upon a capital'of $ lrtO.wOO. There

At the business meeting of F
Co., O. N. (!., held Tuesday even
ing a warm debate arose over a
resolution to change the time of
drill meetings to twice a month in
stead of once a week as at present.
Some severe criticisms and cutting
personalities were indulged in,
which led to a series of repartees
not dissimilar to the Mitchell-Morgan
affair in the IJ. S. senate the
other day. The wordy war, how
ever, was amicably settled, al
though the voluntary resignation
of some of the otlicers was talked
of for a brief period, while the
controversy waxed warm.

It is learned that J.I). Wool,
living above Lebanon, while re
turning home with his team Mon
day met with a serious accident.
His team ran away while going
down a hill and threw him out, in
flicting severe wounds about the
head and chest. He was found
late at night by his sons, who had
gone in search of him, and was
still unconscious. It is thought he
w ill recover.
Tillamook l ist Industry.
The Oregonian says: Messrs.
Barin, Pomeroy, Maxwell, Allen
and Pilyeu. the legislative com
mittee on fish industries, and State
Fish Commissioners F. C. Reed,
E. P. Thompson and R. C. Camp
bell were to leave Portland on
Tuesday for Tillamook to investi
gate the fish industry of that bay,
but, owing to press of business,
were unable to go. They will
make the visit some time in the
near future.

progressing finely. Stayton can
hear the cars every day, but to see

Two of our citizens started fish
ing this morning. It seems as if
one oar came loose from the boat,
and before they could replace it
they drifted into the ditch com
pany's head gates, upsetting the
boat. They saved themselves by
climbing the gates. There was ail
exciting time for a few moments.
Dr. S. 1). McCauley and son have
sent their families to Portland for
a few weeks' visit. They then -jo
to Seattle, where they will take up
their new abode. We miss them
both as citizens and physicians;
notwithstanding, we are glad to
see tiieir vacancy filled with one of
Salem's respectable citizens and
physicians. We wish them all
success.

for President Harrison. He says
