THE MISHOS OF THE COMDEX
CL UB.
The free traders are doing their
best to conceal the part the Cobden j
Club is playing in the free trade
crusade that it inaugurated and is
still trying to conduct to a success
ful issue. The Clevelandites affect
to believe that this English club
that was expressly organized to
help British manufacturers to get
control of the markets of the world
takes no interest in the attempt
that is being made to capture the
richest of markets. If this were
true the Cobden Club, having no
reason for existing, would disband.
Those, however, who are in
possession of the secrets of the free
trade conspiracy know very well
that is is not true that the Cobden
Club is an indifferent spectator of
the free-trade battle being fought
out under the leadership of Grover
Cleveland.
It is true that the English allies
of our free traders are not working
so openly as they did in the past.
They have learned that their ad
vocacy of a pro-British policy for
America did more harm than good
from their point of view. Before
they learned this lesson they were
not so cautions. Thus we find a
committee of the Cobden Club
reporting in 1383 that "in the
United -States the events of the
last few years, the efforts of many
able and active free traders, and
the exertions of your committee in
disseminating publications, have
had the effect of bringing free ex
change to the front as one of the
great questions of the day."
This was a year before Grovr
,,. . , . , ,, .. '
Cleveland received the nomination
for the presidency. His select it n j
to lead the free-trade crusa-Je
ureatlv encouraged the Cobden i
rink A rwl at tind ita itiiti-
mittee. on July IVJ, lf4, using tins ;
very su'estive language :

"Your commirtee continues to

the free-trade cause in foreign

the direct result of lack of proper
