elected to represent, and that I ! lai'S Jcept constantly on nailCU
deem it my duty at the present
time, temporarily sinking all other
questions to be revived at a more
auspicious time to do my utmost f
in this election to strengthen
the republican party, which
broadly and openly espouses the
cause of protection to American
industries.
Mr. Edward P. Allis, the head of
the great machine shops in Mil
waukee, employs over 1.500 men.
He has recently issued a circular
letter which will attract wide
spread attention. Twice Mr. Allis
has been the candidate of the
greenback-labor party for governor
of Wisconsin, and few. employers
stand as high as he does in the
estimation of their workmen and of
the working classes generally. The
following extracts are taken from
his circular letters to his men :
The working men of America
have many difficulties to contend
with, but under present conditions
they are gradually acquiring the ! men
power to more successfully cope
with them, and though the process
may be thought slow, it is never
theless certain that they are con
stantly bettering their condition, j
while their brethren across the eea j
are a vast multitude bo steeped in
poverty and weakness as to almost
abandon hope of a better future.
This Jact is beyond successful
dispute, that whatever ills the
American workmen has to contend
against, his rate of wages is twice
to three times that of his European
brother and it is this point of vant
age that it is his vital and lasting
interest to maintain. It is also of
vital interest to the country itself,
that it should be maintained, for if
AineTican workmen must be re
duced to the low rate of wages
paid abroad and to the want and
miserj- that naturally follows that
low ebb of payment as evidenced
not only by foreign reports, -ut by
the destitute hordes of emigrants
now landing upon our shores, then
our government of and for the
.people is a failure and a fraud.
The only possible way that this
difference of wages between our
own and foreign lands is and can
be maintained, is by the continu
ation of the policy that made the
difference exist, viz: the exclusion,
to a greater or less extent, of the
prodacts of that foreign, cheap
labor from our shores. The policy
which does this hi the policy of
Much interest is manifested in
the forthcoming letter of accept
ance of General Harrison. One of
the general's intimate friends savs
that he has reason to believe that
in his letter the General coincides
with the stand the republican
senators make, and uses some
vigorous expressions as to how the
present accumulations in the
treasury will be disposed of. He
favors proper coast defenses, in
ternal improvements and the
restoration of the American mer
chant marine. He also favors
giving old soldiers the benefit of
the doubt in granting pensions;
the equality of the ballot and the
carrying out of the civil service
reform as undertaken by the re
publican party. The speaker said
the General would also express
himself on the question of public
domain and the rights of fisher-

protection,to home industries, and
it is this policy which is now being
threatened by the present national
administration and which is to be
passed upon in the approaching
election. For the time being, this
question dwarfs all others and
every other issue sinks into insig
nificance beside it. The removal
of this protection which he now
enjoys would place the American
workman upon the same plane as
his less fortunate foreign brother,
and take from his hands the great
weapon of better wage? which he
now holds aud is using successfully
to contend with the" giant and
grasping spirit of the age. It ia
quite probable that the rate of
wages paid, even in America, is
not as high as it should be, and I
fully believe that the distribution
of the products of labor is faulty
and that the producer does not get
his proper share, but I am equally
sure that the road to. a better dis
tribution does not lie in reducing
the share he now gets. That the
