TEACHERS.
WITH
To the Editor of tub Herald:
i In speaking of the importance of
the co-operation of parents with
teachers in the work of the school
room, I assume that I am addres
sing the parents themselves. I
begin by asserting that parents are
most largely responsible for the
education of their own children
than are professional teachers, the
community at large, or the State.
To give to every child a physical,
intellectual, and moral nurture .is
a duty imposed on every parent.
If for convenience, or for the sake
of getting better results, we dele
gate any part of this work to
others, if we commit the child to
the keeping of nurses, and to the
curative art of physicians, his in
tellect to the guidance of teachers,
and his soul to the tuition of the
Habbath school instructors and
pastors, we may thus delegate the
responsibility. We shall be held j
accountable tor the education our
children receive, whoever may be
our agent in giving it. The teach
ers are responsible to us, we toj
posterity.
We have, then, arrived at a very
important and for reaching
parental duty in connection with
secular education. Parents being
always responsible for their chil
dren's education, must always
watch and superintend it. When
we send ouq children to school, we
do not and cannot, as some think,
transfer to others all the care and
responsibility of their education.
Unless we send with them our
watchful solicitude, wrapping them
nhrmr. jw :. nrntpi'tirm s(ririr tvii 1
j - - -. - - - . . . t
influences, and attracting to them
(all possible influences for good, we
are unnatural and reureaut parents,
and it is more than likely that in
future years, the light burden of
duty which we would not bear
when our children were subject to
us, will come back a heavv load of .
unavailing sorrow, ard will sit and
t brood on our hearts, when their
! ignorance shall rebuke us. or their
misdeeds shame us.
Applying this principle to the
details of ordinary school instruc
tion, we see plainly that the
parent should interest himself in
s arising between teacher l
mpil, and in general by keev-
inj the child's confidence, And j
using the trust for his good and !
that of the whole school. For :
every parent luia a duty to the :
whole school as well as to his own ;
children and both for its sake and
their sake, ho i.s bound to do what :
lie can to make his own children j
diligent,. teachable, and dutiful.
i it miznt be ooiecteu totnis view,
by home teachers, that many par
ents are incompetent to superin
tend the education of their children,
a?id that such imperfection would
in their case result only in med
dlesome and annoying interference:
So it wou.'d in a few cases; but
the irreat increase of earnestness
and fidelity in the many, would
more than compensate for any
such annoyances. And I think
teachers will bear me out in says
ing that they would much rathei
encounter the flurries which might
attend a universal solicitude, than
be stagnant on the dead sea of
universal indifference.
But however illiterate a parent
may be, there is one service he
can render his child which will be
valuable beyond all computation :
he can see to it that the child be
regular and punctual. Let me say
to those parents again what they
must have heard a hundred times
already, but xh at will need to be
said 4 great many hundred times
yet that every unnecessary ab
sence is a serious injury to the
pupil, and a robbery of the whole
school. If you decide to send vour
child to a public school rather than
educate him yourself, you must
conform to the prescribed regula
tions. That is implied in the
contrrct between you and the
teacher, and between you and the
wtioie sciiool. i ou nave no more
right to break into the order of the
school by irregularity than you
have to stop a train of cars between
two stitions for your own con
venience and to the inconvenience
of the rest of the passengers. But,
not to insist longer on this view of
the case, it is important that your
child understand that, while he is
attending school, school is the
i main thing. You can not impress
him with the idea that education
! is something to be valued, and
prized, and striven for with earn
estness and patience; in other
words, you cannot educate him at
all, unless it is made the great
truing to which other things, your
convenience and his fancies must
bend. If it makes no great matter
if he is an hour late, or if he stays
ooisrisr beos.
