THERE IS STILL ROOM.
The statement made by Mr.
Blaine that free trade England is
covered over with trusts has met
with frantic efforts on the part of
the democratic newspapers to dis
prove. But in their zeal they have
entirely overdone the matter.
They go so far as to say that such
a condition of affairs in that coun
try is entirely unknown, which iv
so barefaced a statement that it
refutes their own attempts. The
syndicate control of commercial
transactions is notorious in Eng
land, and Mr. Blaine's statement
stands unrefuted and unrefutable.
The pioneer settler of the wilder
ness, who thinks the world is
crowded and pulls up and moves
011, to obtain more elbow room,
when neighbors come within gun
shot hearing of him. is not the
only person who worries for fear
that our ball of earth shall become
bo densely populated as to cease to
be able to yield sustenance to its
inhabitants. Many philosophers
have been moralizing upon the
prospects of being crowded out of
the possibility of getting enough to
eat from the small patch of ground
left to them by the increasing pop
ulation, but their fears are appar
ently groundless. The Sun says
that in a recent report of the Ger
man statistical bureau, the di
rector expresses the opinion that
population ha.s not overcrowded
any part of the empire, and that
its resources, properly husbanded
are adequate to the support of an .
enormous addition to Germany's
45,000,000 people. It is inaccurate
to say that any part of Europe is
overpopulated. When the most of
Germany was a succession of bar
ren plains, and a large part of Hol
land was under water, those coun
tries could have supported only a
small part of the people who now
inhabit them. It would have been
a case, however, not of excessive
population, but of almost wholly
undeveloped resources. So long
as human ingenuity can add to
the productiveness oi any country
it should not have been calUd
overpopulated. Mr. Caddell, of
the Geological Survey of Scotland,
has recently shown that while the
British public complain of over
jwpulation, and look with favor
upon schemes of state-aided immi
gration, a vast deal can yet be
done to enrich soils, reclaim waste
lands, develop new industries, and
improve methods of husbandry,
all of which would add greatly to
the resources of their little corner
of the globe and enlarge its capac
ity for supporting its teeming pop
ulation in comfort. Th Dutch
are still reclaiming from the sea an ,
average of 2,500 acres a year, an i
Holland's resources are more than 1
keeping pace with its increase of j
population. Though there are 343
peopleto the square- mile,the Dutch
live in comfort and few emigrate.
