The following are the proposed
sailing dates of the steamship Wil
lamette Valley for the month of

Friday's overland California ex
press carried a party of three
young me x from Portland bent
upon an interesting mission. Wr.
(J. Steel, S. S. Nicholine and E. I).
Dewert left lor Josephine county,
w here they will explore the famous
Josephine county caves and attei
wards Crater lake. These caves
are labyrinthine in their internal
structure and have never been
fully explored. It is thought that
investigators have penetrated to
the distance of some three miles.
though no accurate
or actual
measurements nave been taken.
Mr. Dewert carries with him a
complete photographic outfit, and
in addition to exterior views will
endeavor to reproduce scenes in
the caves by the aid of a flash
light. He will also take views
while the party are at Crater lake.
Should the flash liirht prove suc
cessful, many interesting pictures
may be looked for, as Mr. Dewert
supplied himself with a large
number of plates. The trip is ex
pected to extend over some ten
davs.

Burned
Deal, O'Reilly & Co.'s creamery,
which is situated on the Columbia
midway between Sunnoose am!
j Holbrook, burned to the ground at
! 3 o'clock Friday morniag. As
near as could he !earned,the build
ing and contents, valued at about
$3000, burned to the ground. The
loss is fully covered by insurance.
The fire is supposed to be the
wcrk of an idcendiary, as ther
wits no fire in or about the built J

Kan Into a Sewer.
Friday evening as Dr. McAlister
was returning home from the conn-1
try in a buggy he ran into the new
sewer being constructed on Ells
A'orth street. The sewer had been
excavated entirely across the street
and no light or guard had been
erected to warn teams of the dan
ger. The horses fell and were
piled up in the ditch and the
buggy and the doctor on top of
them. The horses were cut loose
and taken out somewhat crippled,
and the buggy was broken, while
the doctor was considerably
bruised. He states that he expects
the citv to foot the bill of damages.

mill property was in gteat danger
of being destroyed. The wind
fortunately shifted, and after a
long and desperate fight the de
partment brought the rlames under
control. It is very difficult to esti
mate the loss at this time. There
is some insurance on the mill, but
how much is not known. The hie
is supposed to have caught from a
spark from a passing locomotive.
It is estimated that over 200,000
feet of rough lumber was destroyed.

Salem, Aug. 25. Harry Dubois,
one of the proprietors of the Che
meketa hotel, to-day commifed
an unprovoked assault on Ah Joe,
a Chinese scullion in the hotel
kitchen, knocking him down by a
blow on the head with a heavy
bar used in locking the door. A
warrant is out for his arrest, but he
lias secreted himself.
