EDITORIAL NOTES.
The cry is very frequently heard
that the result of elections is
brought about by the use of money.
Indeed the accusation has passed
into a proverb and is tacitly ac
cepted as a fact. Probably there is
scarcely any foundation for it in
nine cases out of ten when the
claim is made the successful elec
tion was brought about by barter
and sale. The Farmers Friend
says that money is useful in defray
iny the usual expenses of a politi
cal campaign, and in providing the
literature, processions and
pyrotechnics which arouse the
enthusiasm of the votes ; but it is
not so efficacious in a more evil
line., that buying voters, as is so
often charged. The purchasable
voters in this country are not
numerous enough to decide an
election, and the hue and cry about
a corruption fund is an insult toi'7
the rank and file of citizens.
Moral elements influence elections
in the United States more than
sordid-minded politicians suppose.
It is natural for a defeated party to
find any reason for its defeat but a
popular repudiation of its tenets
and candidates, hut no one soberly
believes that any coalition of
millionaires can carry an election
in this country, and such a coal -tion
would injure any candidate
whom it favored. The money bas
are by no means as formidable as
the impecunious and disappointed
patriots sometimes affect to
imagine. Even King Cotton was
dethroned when he became too
arrogant, 'and other combinations
of wealth will fare no better.

As a specimen of what the Re
view ca!l "bright spicy," we clip
the following from the paper re
ferred to, the Umpqua Herald "In
the defense of Col. Ben. Harrison,
Jas. G. Blaine has an opportunity
to distinguish himself as a criminal
lawyer."
Bro. Bell is one of the advocates
of a clean, impersonal canvas. As
he so fervently endorses the
Umpqua Herald, we suppose this
unmitigatedly dirty inuendo that
Gen. Harrison is a "Col." and
even a "criminal'
clean canvas.

President Cleveland ha been
severely criticised for absenting
himself from the field of Gettys

bad taste. Grover did quite the
proper thing in staying at home, in
