Two Handsome Women Found 'With

Ken ia a fort laud Lea.
On Wednesday afternoon De- j
tective Ben Cockrill, Constable I
Sam Simmons atid Officer W. . j
Hart made a raid on a notorious)
opium den in Portland. The joint j
is located in a room in the rear!
ot the building, near tne ena ot a
long hallway on the lower floor.
When the officers entered the hall
way the Chinese on the lookout
began to make a loud noise, and
the smokers, hearing this, kept
quiet ior a time.
After examining all the rooms,
the proper one ws:s located by hear
mg a woman's voice complaining
about a wash bill. ine onicers
rapped on the dior and said:
Open this door," our a suunet-s
like the grave instantly prevailed.
Finallv a voice was heard at a
window in .he room, and it was
observed by looking through a
transom, that the boss of the joint.
Chuck Ouong and six Chinese
were endeavoring to escape through
this sinf.rr.nre. The Olhcers shout-
ed
"Stop, or we'll shoot," and the
threat prevented the seared Mon
gols from leaving the vile den.
The door was then broken open
and the officers were astounded to
observe two young, handsome and
apparently respectable women in
the den.
One was reclining on a mat in
one corner ot the room, with tier
j shoes and stockings off, and appar
i entlv deeply under the influence of
the drug. Mie gave the name of
Miss Cecil King. She is well con
nected at Pendleton. Or.,her fa her
! being a large stock raiser. Mie !
rose to a sitting posture, and en- j
dea voted in a shameful and stupid .
wav to I'Ut her stockings on her '
i shapely feet. The King
evidently a confirmed slave
habit.
! The second girl was found lying
; on t. e opposite side of the room on
! a'rough mat tou h. She recognized
j one of the officers and said :
I "My God? Mr. Simmons, is this
you. l ou Have always thought J
was good, and now vou have found
me out. What will"! do? At the
j same time she was wringing her
nands as it in great anguish. Mie
is said to be the niece of a weil
known jurist of East Portland, and
the wife of an army officer. She
gave the name of Mrs. Norris.
Between the two stood a well
known railroad man troni East
Portland, who also was
1
greatly
j agitateu, and said :
; '"For God's sake don't mention
my name, as i win lose my joo.
Ti en he shoutel to a friend, say
ing :
"Jack, come down out of that
bunk."
.ack, who proved to be another
well known railroad man, roiled
out of the bunk onto the floor, and
he to begged the officers
not to
won Id
mention his name as lie too
lose his position.
All the parties to the transaction
were greativ agitateu and trembled
; ' violently because of the discover'
i th 't the v were addicted to the use
of the lethal drug.
During the three or four minutes
which passed between the tin e the
room was located and its forcible
' i.iiy, t::e hr out m.d opium had
bin made way with, so that there
was no evidence against the visit-
! ors. The visitors pointed out the
! b iss of the joint, Chuck Quong.and
j h w as arrested. The nine visitors
1 were allowed their treedom, on
i condition that they appear against
! the den keeper. Chuck Quong
was put under $200 bonds, and in
I default of that amount was locked
I up in the county jail. The case
j will be tried before Justice Tuttle.
