Great Decline ia the Number of Stock acd
iu Prices,
The Oregonian says : J. E. Todd,
who has just returned to Oregon
from the stock ranges in Custer
county, Montana, is in the city,
lie says there is a great decline m
the number of cattle on the ranges
in Montana as compared with last
year. He estimates the decrease
at fully 75 per cent. This decline
is due to tne seventy ot the winter ;
seasons. The losses last winter j
were so extensive that many j
stockmen have sold their entire :
herds and have gone out of the
business. Others have driven
their herds into British Columbia,
and will try that district the coming
! winter. Then, too, Mr. Todd
i says, there has been a very large
I decline in the prices paid for
! cattle. Last vear prices ran as
high as $45 a head, but now cattle,
of equal quality bring only $'20,
and, in occasional instances, less.
Mr. Todd says, however, that all
of the stockmen are not retiring.
Some of them, notwithstanding
the losses of last winter, have re
stocked their ranges and will brave
the storms of the coming winter.
That which leads some of the
stockmen to drive their herds over
the line into the British Posses
sions is the belief that, although
the weather will be quite as cold as
in Montana, there will be no bliz

Mr. Miller is the son of Hon. R.
C. Miller, an old resident of Linn
county, having resided here since
1S47 He is the ieading druggist
of the thriving town of Lebanon
and is well known in Linn county,
and we might say in the state as,
although a young man, he is quite
active in politics, having been a
member of the last democratic
state convention which met in
Pendleton. He received his edu
cation at the state university at
Eugene, and is a popular young
business man.
After the ceremony an elaborate
wedding supper was served, and
the happy couple were the recip
ients of warm congratulations, and
a large number of elegant wed
ding., presents from their many
friends.

A great controversy has arisen
over the question as to which style
of plug is the Harrison and which '
the Cleveland hat, and no doubt
the sale of campaign hats has been
seriously affected thereby. But
now comes the Oregonian and says
that it "is able to announce on the
luthority of the leading hatters of
"ew York that the following styles
lave been adopted for the cam
aign of 1888 : Republicans
'earl plug, with black band,
'emocrats Pearl plug, with white
and. Any other color is a mis
epresentatiou and should not be
ountenanced, as pearl is the only

trifle too much notoriety over his
bet anyway. The draft was for
warded him, and now Hyman is
probably shaking hands with him
self in congratulation over the
narrow escape he had from the
i very
probable loss of $1000. But
he will find that while he has
saved $1000 he has earned a wide
spread reputation as a very wind
blowhard.
Boi-glurs at Indrpcndraee.
A gentleman who returned yes
terday from Independence
from Independence states
that on Sunday night the residence
of Mr. Atkins, about one mile and
a half from town, was entered by
burglars and a silver watch and
some $2( in cash taken. So clever
were they that no one in the house
was disturbed. The night follow
ing the store of J. L. Stockton was
also assaulted, but the burglars
failed ta gain an entrance, although
they succeeded in breaking the
lock from the door. A bar was
placed against the door which they
could not remove. Again on Tues
day night attempts were' made on
the residences of E. W. Cooper
and S. W. Smith. The burglars1,
gained entrance into the residence
of the former, but Mr. Cooper was
awakened and arose when
the
thief was frightened and hurriedly
made his escape, and one hour
later had almost entered the resi
dence of Mr. Smith, when he was
again frightened away by the
awakened inmates. It seems that
a gang of tramps are making their
way through the town, also sev
eral suspicious characters have
been seen about town.
The Agricultural College.
The prospectus of the State Agri
cultural College under the new
management has just been issued.
It is a small four page folder, hut

to those who contemplate entering
this institution. The state has
