SILVER ASD GOLD.
An apparently very useful and
sensible bill has been introduced
in the United States Senate, by
Senator i'alnier of Michigan, that
has for its object the restoring to
proper relations the two basis of
our circulating medium silverarid
go.'d. Undoubtedly tlie interests
ol the people will be enhanced if
the bill becomes a law. We gather
from exchanges that the bill pro
vides that the fund now held in
gold coin or gold bullion in the
Treasury for the redemption of
United States Treasury notes, and
that which may hereafter accumu
late, shall be composed half of gold
and half of silver, namely, one-hah
to be gold coin or gold bullion
and the other half silver bullion o
Htandard fineness equal to the gold
half. The Secretary of the Treas
ury is authorized to purchase
$3,000,000 worth of silver bullion
ier month, such bullion to be the
product of United States mines,
and have it prepared in ingots of
suitable form and weight, paying
for it with gold coin out of the
Redemption Fund, such purchases
to continue until the present
amount of gold coin and gold bul
lion in the Redemption Fund shall
be reduced to $",0,000,000.
If thLj is done any holder , of
United States Treasury notes
demanding their redemption will
be paid half in gold coin and half
in silver bnl'ion or standard dol
lars. If paid with silver dollars,
then there shall be coined from
silver bullion in the Redemption
Fund enough bullion to produce
standard silver dollars eual to the
number of silver dollars paid out.
and these shall be placed in the
General Treasury Fund in place of
those withdrawn. Wnen the nor
mal ratio of silver to gold shall
have been restored, the silver
bullion in the Redemption Fund
shall be coined into standard dol
lars, and half of the Reueaiption
Fund shall then be held in silver
dollars.
The American girl seems to be
endowed with the indomitable
grit that succeeds wherever she
may be placed. The Detroit Free
Press says: It may be interesting
for the ambitious girl who has
plenty of money, which she would
like to surrender for a tide, to know
that an American woman is at
present a thorn in the liesh of the
Iron Chancellor, Bismarck. This
woman is the Conn e -s Waldersee.
She was a Miss Mary Lee, of Nt w
Jersey. At 2: years of age she
was a widow with a fortune of
$4,000,000. The Count Waldersee,
who was a major-general in the
Prussian army, married her. The
Countess has lately taken an active
part in German politics, a fact
which has somewhat amazed Prince
Bismarck. For this reason he has
tried to shelve her husband, who
aspires to be the successor to Von
Moltke. The question now is
whether Bismarck or the Ameri
can woman will win the day. By J
marriage she is a cousin ol tlie
Emueror and she seems determin
ed to take advantage of the rela
tionship by making things just as
lively as possible.
