EDITORIAL y OTA'S.
In his speeeh advocating the bill
he introduced, Mr. Mills, of Texas,
said : "We produce and exchange
among ourselves, and consume in
the satisfaction of our wants, more
of the products of our own labor
than the 200,000,000 on the conti
nent of Europe. We have invent
ed, and have now in successful
operation,, more labor-saving ma
chinery than all other people. We
are turning out over six billions'
worth of products of manufactures
every year, and producing them at
lower tost of production, and, at
the same time, paying higher
wages to our workmen than any
other people." This being the
case, why cannot Mr. Mills let
well enough alone? Does he want
to lessen our products to undo all
1 that the inventive genius of the
American people has accomplished ?
Does he want us to adopt a policy
that will render the United States
secondary to the nations of the Old j
World? Does he prefer a
that will prevent us from paying
higher wages to our workmen ?
National Labor Tribune.
The terrible effects of opium
smoking have been graphically de
picted time and again, until every
. individul n the country is aware
of the con sequences of indulgence
in the hi bit. Yet it seems that
opium srujoking is on the increase,
judging bjy the list of victims. The
latest is the case of the young
woman of San Marcial, N. M., who
succombed to the effects of an
opium debauch, and shows how
the vice is spreading on this coast.
This latest victim found the drug
at a Chinaman's place, and smoked 1
so much that she became uncon
scious, and died without recover
ing from the deadly stupor. As
usual in such cases, the Chinese
escaped, and no one can be pun
ished for causing the death of this
foolish young woman.

A Portland: k named Andrew
Roberts, who is New York, has ex
pressed the belief that Oregon will
?o democratic next autumn. This
same belief was expressed at St.
Louis some weeks ago, but after
they had heard from Oregon, they
said they were only joking.
The democratic national central
committee, it is indicated, will de
pend upon the President's mes
sage and the Mills bill for cam
paign documents. It certainly
takes them .a ..long time to hear
from Oregon, or else they are
blindly grave over their own folly
and destruction.
