which he pays this tribute to the
value of this mining district: "I
regard the Santiam district a per
fect repetition of Wallowa county,
where the little galena at first
existing will eutirely disappear
and give place to virgin silver and
the sulphurets of silver. The rich,
fine carbonates on the surface and
the development work so far as
carried, both tend to confirm the
impression that the district will not
be a siiver-lead but a silver-gold
producing district, with silver pre
dominating. At the point I visited

which can be cut eventually by the

this group, down the mountain, is

but it is an actual fact. So much

ago. Tiie vein above tnis one is
very handsome, opened by a shaft
some ten feet deep and cannot fail
to prove rich at depth. By actual
measurement I found it twenty
eight feet wide from wall to wall.
There are four locations on this
vein, two to the north and two to
the south. This location is calied
the Mountain Queen, and the
name is well chosen. The upper
most vein, on the very summit ot
the mountain, is said to be aurifer

surface ; but tiie heavy rain pre

Oae of the miners employed in the
Bondhoolder tunnec recently took out
a solid nugget of crystallized gold
weghing within a few pennyweigts of
fifteen pounds, which, when dressed
and denuded of all other substances
will tip the scales at about thirteen
pounds, and is worth about $3000.
The nugget was fouud in the face of
the tunnel, at a point where the cre
vice had widened somewhat, aad
very near the point of contact be
tween the slate and a auartzite dike
that extends across the claim in a
northeasterly and southwesterly dir
ection. It is believed that on the
line of this contact larger quantities
of free gold will be found than have
been discovered on Farncomb hill.
This is the second largest nugget
that have been found in the camp,

Three of these veins can be opened

be excelled, with water power and
timber in endless abundance.
Jiome six miles, as the bird flies,
on the same range to the north are
quite a number of locations, near

in an advanced state of develop
