A FACT.
In considering the free trade
sie of tl'e argument, the advo
cates of t at mode of procedure,
fa:! to note the fact that working
men tro.-i all parts of the
world persist in coming to this
country of a .protective tariff for
better wages and better living,
while no American dreams of quit
ting the I'nitetl States for a similar
reason. -
With our protective tariff abol
ished, and the product of the
cheaper labor of other countries
admitted free, it is certain that the
wages paid in Europe, in Asia, in
India and in China would inevita
bly regulate the wages in this
country. These are facts which no
free-trader can gainsay or contro
vert. Free-trade is fatal to the
wage-worker, but clover to the
capitalist. It is death to the man
ufacturer, but wealth and prosper
ity to the merchant importer.

We are apt to form conclusions in
reference to our fellowmen that are
erroneous, from the fact that they
are based upon superficial observa
tions. It tkes trying situations to
draw out and fully demonstrate
what the man is. As Lippincotts
recently said, it takes great emer
gencies to call forth the great soul.
War in th twinkling of an eye
turns village drunkards and petti
fogging lawyers into generals and
statesmen. Love transforms Cy
mon from a brute into a man.
' Necessity makes Shakspeare a
dramatist; accident reveals to
Scott his true powers. The most
commonplace men and woiqen
have passed through the fool's par
adise of love, when they were
divine beings worshiping divinity,
and in that fool's paradise they for
a brief moment found their true
selves, saw deep into the soul of
their consort. That flitting dream
was in truth an awakening, the
brief opening of the spiritual eye.
When the world of facts has passed
away, our dreams may remain.
The man of common sense asks
for realities, the poet knows that
only illusions are true. Look you,
the man whom you hate are there
xo women who worship him,
children whov look up to him?
Love is a divine delight ; it reaches
out over and around its object into
the illimitable ; it is ? part of the
over-soul, of the infinite, of lod.
Hatred is painful ; it strains and
racks the body, it blinds the vision,
it makes a man conscious of his
mortal limitations. Love sees the
virtues that are of the soul;
hatred only the diseases of the
skin. "All men have their faults,
and stealing was Bill's," said a
weeping widow over the corpse of
a desperado, shot in attempted
burglary. And grotesque, ludi
crous as ihe expression may seem,
she was right. Mie knew that not , ,,f dwelling hou-es. including Queen
