OF NEW YORK.
FOR PRKSIDKSTlAt KLKCTORS,
ROBERT M'LEAN, WM. KAl'US,
C. W. FCLTON.

The republican platform adopted
at Chicago enunciates more sound
principles of government than any
public document which has been
issued before the people for a Ion;;
time. A few of its declarations
are compressed in the following
paragraph fer the convenience of
readers: "We are uncomprom
isedly in favor of the American
system of protection. We protest
against its destruction as proposed
by the president and his party.
They serve the interests of Europe.
rvVe will support the interests of
America. Ve accept the issue
and confidently appeal to the
people for their judgment. The
protective system must be .main
tained. Its abandonment has
always beem followed by general
disaster to all interests except those I
v., the usurer and the sheriff. We
denounce the Mills bill as destruc
tive T.o the general business, the
labor and the farming interests of
the couiitry, and we heartily in
dorse the consistent and patriotic
action of the republican represen
tatives in congress in opposing its
passage. We condemn the propo
sition of the democrats to place
wool on the free list, and we insist
that the duties thereon shall be ad
justed and maintained so as to
furnish full and adequate protec
tion to that industry. The repub
lican party would effect all needed
reduction of the national revenue
by repealing the taxes upon to
bacco, which are an annoyance and
ljurden to agriculture, and the tax
upon spirits used in the arts and
for mechanical purposes, and by
such revision of the tariff laws as j
will tend to check imports of such
articles as are produced by our
people, the production of which
gives, employment to our labor,
