Commencement week in Fugene
is an event long looked forward to
oy the more tiionhttul .f the
people. It is safe to say that the
exei'ereises were ol so gemd a char
acter as to disappoint nobody,
i here was a marked excellence
from the noble baccalaureate ser
mon of Prof. Van Scoy all through
the week to an oration of especial
merit by graduate MeOinn. of
Portland. The criticism so often
made, that the essays and orations
of commencement are not of a
practical nature was this time cer-
taiuly without foundation. The
faculty and citizens generally may
well be proud of the state umver -
sity. J here were o college giaou-

Alex. Downing, who resides in
Linn county a short distance across
the Santiani river from J?tayton, came
to Salem Thursday evening, and a
message followed him to the effect
that his 14-year old son, Sam, had
his leg broken a short distance above
the ankle. The boy, it seems, was
riding a horse that was unshod, and
the animal slipped on the wet ground
and fell, catching the boy's leg with
the above result. A doctor from
-Stayton was summoned aijid set the
fracture, and the sufferer is getting
along nicely. He was but a short
