The Chicago republican conven
tion, after five days of wise delib
eration, has put in nomination
for president of the United States
Gen. Benjamin Harrison, of Indi
ana, grandson of President Win.
H. Harrison, the grand old hero
who led the famous presidential
canvass of "Tippacanoe and Tylei
too," of 1S40, and great grandson
of Benjamin Harrison, the delegate
from Virginia who introduced the
declaration of independence into
the colonial congress and one of its
signers. But Gen. Benjamin Har
rison does not need to refer to his
ancestors for fame or honor, for his
own personal career has established
both. He was born at North Bend,
Ohio, on August 20, 1833, gradu
ated from Miama university in
1852, studied law in Cincinnati
and in 1854 removed to Indianapo
lis, Indiana, where he has since
reside d.,. He was elected supreme
court reporter in 1800, ind served
in the army from 18(52 to 18G5,
going in as second lieutenant and
holding the rank of brevet briga
dier general at the close. Presi
dent Hayes appointed him on the
Mississippi river commission in
1878, and he was elected United
States senator March 4, 1881.
Gen. Harrison possesses a clean
record, indomitable energy, per
severing and painstaking habits of
labor, undoubted statesmanship,
and no connection with disparaging
jobs to effect his election, and will
carry a large majority of the na
tion's votes to place him in the
white house next March. The
convention took an unusual length
of time to make the selection, but
they selected wisely and well.
For the second place on the tick
et no better man could be found
The African explorer, Henry M.
Stanley, has been a prominent
figure before the civilized world
and barbarous Africa. A day or
two since the telegraph brought
intelligence which led to the belii f
that Stanley had come to an un
timely end, but later news indi
cates that, although in a tight
place, he is likely to pull through
and finally reach civilization.

For instance, a recent English ob

"I found on that ranch a manager

and an assistant manager drawing
a salary of $6250. In addition to
this they had spent thousands of
pounds sterling in worthless im

cattle business is concerned. I
found on that Western prairie ranch
located many, many miles from a

as ridiculous. The men who should

A German doctor has been in
vestigating a to the size of men's
and women's hearts. The mascu
line heart weighs more and is
larger than that possessed by the
fair sex. A heart, it would appear,
grows most quickly during the first
and second years of life, and be
tween the second and seventh
years it doubles in size. Until
after the fiftieth birthday the heart
still srows a little. In childhood
the male aud female 1 e irt are the
same size, but after manhood the
masculine heart develops much
more than the female, and ends by
being two square inches larger
than the latter.
