At 11 o'clock the Eastf -Portland
team was in readiness and a-fitvy

The Portland team followed
about half an hour iater, and as
they came clown the track they
were greeted with shouts. . When
their time of 37.1--. 1 seconds was
announced every oody concluded
they were the victors.
The Albany team, however, soon
dispelled the illusion and came
down the track at a rattling pace.
When within about twenty feet of
the goal one of the men, J. Koss,
fell and was severely bruised. Tiiis
interferred materially witii their
time, but they succeeded in lower
ing the time previously announced,
making the distance in "7-3 sec
onds. "Our Bovs" hose team, of "Walla
Walla, were the next runners, and
the way they came tearing down
the street evoked much enthusi
asm. They came like an arrow,
and never made a slip, getting
water in ot 14-15 seconds, winning
the race.
The Lebanon team, after a long
and tedious delay, got started at
1 :o0 p. m. They were slow in get
ting water, and then the time was
announced at 40 seconds.
The Vancouver team made splen
did tune in running, but failed to
get the nbzzle on before water
came. No time was allowed them,
but the distance was covered and

Col. L. F. Copeland, who is said
to be one of the most, eloquent
humorous and instructive lecturers
before the public, will deliver a
lecture on "Snobs and Snobbery"
at the opera house, in this city on
Thursday evening, June 28. The

says of this gifted speaker: "No

The entertainment given at the
opera house last evening by the
ladies ot the .M. E. church was a
very pleasant atl'air. The pro
gramme, consisting of musical aud
literary exercises and tableaux,
was well carried out and was at
tended by a irood sized audience.
The exercises throughout were
interesting, and the affair in a
financial point of view also was
quite a success.
Moore now lives up near ilarns
burg. The woolen mills had fully in
tended to shut down last Saturday
to clean out the ditch, but owing
to so much water in the creek, they i
keep running right along, and no j
one can sav now when they will !
stop.
Mover P.ros. have been trying to
get some logs 'down the creek the
past week, but have riot succeeded
in getting many into their boom,
owing to lack of water. This has
been a poor .spring for logging on i our store

Rev. Gould is oil on a two weeks
trip to the southern part of the
state.
Mr. Elder from east, unloaded a
carload of thoroughbred cattle at
this place yesterday.
Messrs. Blaker and Shoalwater
have traded the remnant of their
cattle for horses, which they intend
shipping East.
Dr. J. V. Gaff, of this place, has
successfully removed a large cystic
tumor from the throat and neck of
Mrs. Johnson, a lady who came
here a short time ago from Omaha,
for treatment.
Miss Lottie Peery, daughter of
Mrs. F. M. lvineiiart, died last
Tuesday of brain fever, after ar
illness of three weeks. The re
mains were taken to Portland for
interment.
F. A. Watts has sold his drug
store and residence to Ed. Holmes,
who has moved into the city, and
is now ready for business.
The growing crops are looking
fine, esecially the gardens, and
no one laments the fact that the
late rains have spoiled all the
small potatoes.
Much needed repairs have been
done to Second street, by filling up
the holes and grading "the street.
We believe thanks are due mainly
to the public spirit of Messrs.
Davis Bros.

on South Beach. The opening
made through the approach of the
jetty has widened end several acres
of land has been washed into the
sea. The grove where the 4th of
July was celebrated last year is
partly gone and the hotel and
other private property is seriously
threatened. Nothing can be done
'o stop the ravages of the water un
til the next appropriation for rivers
and harbors is made available.
We hope the time may be hasten
ed, for the work of destruction is
