Representative Hermann, in the
session of the house last night
calied up and had passed his biil
providing for the construction of a
hi idge across the Columbia river
between The Dalies, in Oregon and
the Washington territory shore.
He also secured the passage of a
bill providing for the constructJO'i
of a bridge across the Coumh,.i
river between Washington territorv
and Oregon t at LtiCama. These
bills have both passed the senate
and will now be sent to the presi
dent for his approval.
During the consideration of the
sundry civil appropriation bid in
the house to-day. Representative
Hermaun had incorporated au
amendment providing for a .resur
vey of certain townships in South
ern Oregon, on the Um pqua, above
Ctinyonville. The boundaries of
these townships overlap and have
caused great confusiou in the titles
of settlers within them. Although
many attempts have been made
through petitions of citi7.ens inter
ested and through recommendations
of the surveyor gcnerwls of Oregon.,
it has been found impossible to
obtain an adjustment ot the bound
aries, the department always
holding that in such cases, ami
where the title has passed from the
government to purchasers, the only
relief was through special lec
isiat:on by congress. The amend
ment off red by Mr. Hermann
to (hy accomplishes this purpose.

to-day a complaint of the citizens
of Newburg, Yamhill coantv.
Oregon, against the recently ap
pointed postmaster at that' office,
who threaten-- to temove the post
office beyond the limits of the
town, and they vigorously protest
against such action.
Secretary Vilas has reversed the
decisioa of the commissioners of
theg;.neral land office in the case
of the Northern Pacific Railroad
Company vs. Edward R. Learning
and James -M. Emery, on appeal
by the former. The commissioner's
decision held that eighty acres of
land in the North Yakima, Wash
ington territory, lano district was
