THE 31 AILS
As in overy other avocation of
life, the success of a fanner is usu
ally ganged by the amount of wealth
he may accumulate. However,
some people are beginning to altar
their conclusions upon this subject
and adopt tiie views expressed in
the strong language of the Hus
bandman, when it says that the
succepsiui tanner is not ihe man
who, by working from daylight till

MAKING OBJECTIONS.
'By the custom in certain churches,
whenever a marriage ceremony is
to be performed, the question is
asked, has any person any objec
tion to make why this marriage
should not be solemized. The cus
tom prevails in England, and a
" clergyman and his congregation
were astonished recently by a par
ishioner forbidding the bans of
marriage between two persons who
intended to enter that holy state.
Being demanded his reasons, he
stated that the would-b-3 bride
groom was in debt, and therefore
in no position to maintain a wife.
This unusual incident suggests to a
writer in the Loudon Telegraph
that it would not be a bad idea if
Lucifer should appoint a "devil's
advocate," who, dressed in his
Sunday best, should pass as a par
ishioner now and then, and forbid
the bans as, for instance, between
a ruined swell and his noble in
tended "Lady Vere de Vere,"
the devil's advocate might plead,
"the young gentleman is a rip; he j
is over head and ears in debt, he
races, he gambles, he swears, he
drinks." "Edwin, are you aware
that Angelina has a mother a
mottier who would make the sub-
. terranean villa of my respected
employer far too hot to hold herself
and us, and who, as a mother-in-law,
would make you, ever' day
of your life, see fireworks that Mr.
Brock has not yet dreamed of?"
And thus the forbidd'erof the bans
might reel off his dreary catalogue
of objections hot temper, cold
feet, a nagging disposition, an over
fondness for Ebenezer chapel, a
propensity for poker, an insatiable
appetite for new bonnets and cor
sets at three genuies and a half a
pair, an inveterate love of smoking,
a weakness for maraschino, a par
tiality for Italian tenors and (i'er
inah fiddlers, excessive fondness
ior the pianoforte and addictedness
to table-turning,spirit-rapping and
thought-reading all might be
pleaded as obstacles to matrimony
and artf jlly advanced by the "ad
vocate" as being designed for the
benefit of mankind and woman
kind. Such specious objections,
however, could not, of course, be
entertained, and humanity will
continue to be married and given
-in marriage as heretofore.
