Chairman Jones, who delivered a

with applause. In his opening
speech Thurston's statement that
Blaine must be denied tiie support
of the convention was greeted by
loud cries of '-No, no,", and pro
longed applause from the gallery.
He continued in a strong speech
squarely iu favor of protecting
American products, and mentioned
several prominent candidates in
turn, each of whom he said was
thoroughly in harmony with the
protective policy of the republican
party. His remarks on the Chi
nese question elicited applause.
He referred in vigorous terms to
manner in which the democratic
platform framed at St. Louis strad
dled the tariff question.
Senator Hoar, of Michigan, pre
sented to temporary cnaiiman
Thurston a gavel made of wood,
under which the party was organ
ized in Jackson, Alichigan.
A resolution of sympathy for
General Sheridan was passedand
ordered to be forwarded to him at
Washir g'on.
The cail of states was omitted
and General Fremont was intro
duced to the convention, who
made a ringing speech, in which Le
predicted a splendid victory for the
republican party 'under the princi
ples of pro. -ction.

Dolph of Oregon is expected here
from Washington, but has not yet ar
rived. The Oregonhns with their
six votes say that they will follow
the lead of the dcuhtiul states.
They are rather iueiined to act iu
concord with the otiier Paeirtc c a ;t
states aud extreme Western states
aud territories. Allison, Harrison or
Greshan would suit Oregon. The
Alger boomers have been urging the
Oregonians to declare for Michigan's
favorite son, Idaho territory, with
her two votes, has enlistened under
Allison '8 bauner. As the situation
btands now, the two delegates are
favorable to Iowa's senator, but
Idaho's future action may be govern
ed by the action of California.
Montana territory also has tA'o
votes. Col. George 0, Eaton, a
Montana delegate, says: "One of us
is for AJ'ison; the other is for Gres
ha'm. We haye tried to unite, hue
have given up ail hope and have com
promised. If 1;son leads Gresharn
after the second ballot, Adison will

pany came up in the U. S. circuit
court yesterday on a motion to
s'"ike out the complaint tor dupli
city, that is, it contained twocauses
for action not stated separately.
The action was brought on a
written contract marie between
Hunt and the iaiiro;id company,
by which Hut agreed to -construct
a eerie. 1 1 number of miles of road tor
tie company, who were to pay him
monthly, on the estimates of their
engineers, receiving a oinaU per
centage as security for performance
of contract. He began work in
May, 1SS7, and worked to Decem
ber of the same vcar, when he quit
because the company failed to pay
as it agreed lo.
He alleges in his complaint that
the work done was worth $30,000,
and also aLegcs in the same com
plaint that in doing tnis work he
was at a large expense in making
roads and bridges ami tmnsoorting
plant, stores, etc., by which he will
lose largely, and for which he asks
special damages in the sum of
$60,000.
The court decided that there
were two distinct causes of action
arising out of the same transaction,
and might, therefore, be joined in
