Chicago next
The king of Gorea is said to be
truly loyal to Ms mother-in-law, as
he opened the extensive electric
light system in her honor.
The Albany Collegiate Institute
has completed its twenty-first year,
and is in a thriving condition, with
an able v jrps constructors.
Mayor Hewitt, of New York,
who saved that state for Cleveland
four years ago, says that he cannc t
swallow his free trade doctrine,aud
will not support him this year.
His head is level.
The world does move. Govern
or Hill, of New York, has signed
the bill abolishing hanging for all
murders committed alter Jan. 1,
1 881, and substituting death by
electricity.
California produces 36,418,188
pounds of wool annually. Only
one state produces more, that i-
the great state of Texas. Califor
nia wool growers will rise up th;s
fall after the manner in which
Oregonians did on June 4th.
It is said that about thirty
thousand Germans, who left their
native land to escape military ser
vice, are at liberty to return now,
as the claim for their service
expired with the life of the old
emperor. Probably very few will
desire to take advantage of the
amnesty, however.
Nearly all of the principle facts
of science that have become useful
and applicable to human necessi
ties, owe their knowledge to mere
accidental discovery. It is said
that quite recently an ammonia
tank in Cincinnati, while standing
under a tree in which were hun
dreds of English sparrows, ex
ploded, and the fumes killed all the
little pests. Thus a method of
getting rid of obnoxious birds and
iusects is made known.
The inspiring scene of a mag
nificent train of cars, gaily floating
banners, flags and streamers, bear
ing the Pacific coast delegations to
Chicago to attend the republican
From the Chicago Inter-Ocean o
June 6: Oregon fired the first gun
of the campaign of 1S8S cn Uonday
and the shot was a Vfad one for Mr.
Cleveland and the democratic
party. There was a straight re
publican issue on congiessman,
the republicans favoring piotctkn
and the democrats standing by tl e
president's message. On this
l straight issue the republican ma
jority was about 7000. against a
republican plurality of 16.')5 in
18S6.
The democratic hope of carrying
the United State.-- senate rested
mainly on securing a democratic
majority in the Oregon legislature
elected on Monday. Of the ninety
members the republicans elected
sixty-six, a gain of thirteen mem
bers over the legislature elected in
1886.
The result of this congressional
and legislative election fixes the
status of Oregon for this year. In
Jurfe 1S84, the republican vote on
congressman was 25,(51)9, and in
November of the same year the
republican vote for Blaine was
26,860. The state is strongly re
publican on the issue that will be
prominent in the presidential
campaign, and as goes Oregon so
the other Pacific States. The Ore.
gon election is like a slap in the
face to Mr. Cleveland and his rr.
Louis convention.

The Bell telephone monopoly
have entered into a war with the
authorities of the city of St. Louis.
The city passed an ordinance lim
iting th company to $50 per year
for charges for the use of single
instruments, insteadjof $100 as
heretofore charged. The company
claimed the city had no authority
in that direction, andjthe result is
that the company are removing in
struments, and the people are try
ingevery way to effect a compromise
so that they can retain them.
The question as to who are in
terested in the tariff reform meas
ures is pretty well illustrated in
the statement recently made that
the wage-earners on farni3 in this
country exceed 10,000,000, while
there are upwards of 25,000,000
persons directly dependent on
farming for their livelihood. These
