hive been -450,000. One man who
bought 30,000 worth of the books
failed in business and effected a
settlement with his creditors at 10
cents ou the dollar. Another pur
chaser of 20,000 sets has been dilatory
in hi3 payments, and great difficulty
is experienced in briuging him to a
sett eineufc. The sale of the
"Memoirs" continues steadily, hue
only a small iucome is derived from
that source at present, as most of the
sales accrue to the agents who took
large numbers of the work, and still
have copies on hand from which to
supply purchasers.. It will be a year"
or two before the sales again become
large enough to make any consider
able income to Mrs. Gra..t.
Russia's Canal Project.

The project of uniting the Sea .of
Azov with the Black Sea is about to
receive a practical solution. It is
.understood that a company, working
with a French capital to the extent
of 85.000.000 francs, is only waiting
for the sanction of the Russian Gov
ernment to commence operations.
The canal will be US kilometres
ioug, and will take four or five years
to eou struct. The Duke of Leuchen
berg is at the head of the undertak
ing It has been stipulated that for
the construction, working, and
administration of the canal only
Russians shall be employed, though
French engineers wili direct the
works. The canal will specially
benefit the -southeastern border dis
tricts, which produce again, salt,
minerals, and fuel n abundance.
Kitted by a Rattlesnake.

A few days at;o A. A. Crumbley
of Randolph county, - Ga., was at
work ou his farm when he heard a
dog which always followed him bark
ing furiously in a skirt of woods near
by. In a few mimutes the dog
howled and ran to him. Just below
the dog's eyes were two drops of
blood abcut three-fourths of ?n in2h
apart. He. knew at once that the
ilog was bitten by a snake, and went
to where he had heard him harking
and found a large rattler that he had
killed. The dog died in a few
minutes- The nake was over fii j
leet long and carried ten raUles.

ton, Del., whose wife had been miss
ing for a few weeks, found her hndv
in this city a tew days ago under sad
circumstances. Airs. Johnson came
to this city on a isit, but fell in a
tit on the street. She was taL-on n
the Jetietsou Hospital, where she
died, and, no one claiming the body,
it was given to the dissecting room of
Jefferson College. When Mr. John
sou found the body it was on the
aisoectmg table.
