widows of soldiers of. the war of the
rebellion shall commence at the
date of the death of their husbands.
This legislation favorably afreets
all claims of widows of the late
war, which have been nl"d in the
pension office on or after July 1 ,
1SS0, and which have been allowed
from the date of filing of the claims,
but will not favorably affect such
widows as filed before July 1, 18S0,
and which have been allowed, pen
sions iiavint: already been t:r.uited
in those cases from the date of
their husbands death. The com
missioner ot pensions snves notice
that in the settlement under thi
law ot claims already allowed no
formal 1 application w ill be required
and that tlie services of anattovnev
will not be necessary. Widows
entitled to pensions under said
law need only to write a letter, giv
ing name, postorhee address and

ifornia. The Klamath reservation
was not included in any of these, hut
was set apart to be disposed of under

violate the law forbidding trading
with Indians living in Indian

In the storing oi hay in the barn
1 found a shrinkage of from 17 to
23 per cent. I did not ascertain
w hether the loss was moisture or
dry matter, but certainly it was
largely water. American experi
ments have made it probable that
there is loss of dry matter in stored
hay. If further investigation finds
a material loss in this direction, it
will be a strong argument in favor
of the silo, or of compacting hav,
as done by the advocates of half-
d.ied hay. Dr. Armsby quotes
foreign trials touching the digesti
bility df stored hay in the Fall, and
again in the Spring, as follows : At
the time of cutting, 62 per cent ;
three months after cutting, 56 per
cent : in the Spring 54 per cent.
Possibly the result may be due to
the impaired digestive capacity of
animals in the Winter and in the
Spring, but it is not probable that
the whole difference is thus caused.

sented to the President. As he

Cleveland. Some of the bystanders
exclaimed: "How awfully couu
tiy!"' but were quickly subdued,

presented to people of note. The

Spontaneous Combustion.

J. A. Crow, who lives in the
northern part of the town, got a
lesson iu naturel philosophy and
lost a hat last Sunday. Coming
into the house in the afternoon he
tossed hi; hat carelessly on a tabie
wnereon stood a globe with gold
fish. After a time Mrs. Crow said
she smelled something burning,
and they made a search without
finding anything. In doing so the
hat was turned around and soon
the smell was noiced again. This
was repeated several tin es beforo
they noticed that the hat was being
burned. A close examination
showed that the sun's rays in pass
ing through the globe were con
centrated on the hat and had
burned a series of little holes at
intervals around it. Every tima
the lmt was turned a new place
was-burned, and the smell of burn
ing felt filled the room. That hat
wnl do for ordinary wear, but as a
Sunday ornament its career is past.
An Angry Young Wanicn.

1'here is one mad young woman in
Maiysxllle. She has been searching
for a husband, and has answered a
number of advertisements by men
who professed to desire to become
good husbands. Not many day ago
this yoeng lady answered an adver
tisement in the Examiner, an J giving
h-.r true name asked to become ac
quainted through the medium of
photographs She has received the
advertiser's photograph, and also a
letter wht3h hn. caused her to shed
tears. The picture was that of a
young Marysvillian who has not been
away from here many months, and
the letter advised her to take the
sto-k of dry goods, bustles, wigs.and
small bank account and go to the
highway and lay in wait for a lantern
j-'wed son of toil who could appre
ciate her loveliness.
