cratic national convention was
called to order at 10 a. m. to-day, . .

president's last letter to congress.
A resolution was adopted, de
manding the admittance to the
union of the Northwest territories,
also endorsing the Mills bill and its
immediate passage by congress.
Tarpey, of California, nominated
Thurman for the vice-presidency,
and Voorhees in a strong speech
nominated Gray. lie said that
without Indiana the democrats had
no hope of carrying the election.
When it was found that state after
state demanded Thurman's nomi
nation and would accept no com
promise, the name of Gray was
withdrawn and Thurman's nomi
nation was made unanimous. The
con ention adjourned sine die at i
2:15.
