Brtf OBLICAS PLATFOB, M,
We, yonr committee on Platfor
and Resolutions beg leave to repor
as follows:
The Republicans in the State of
Oregon, in convention assembled, re
affirming their allegiance to, and con
fidence in, the great; Republican
party, of the nation, of whose grand
achievements and long and success
ful administration of the government
of the United Strtes they have so
much cause to be proud, and the
glory of which they are entitled to
show, now make and preseut the fol
lowing statement of their principles
and policy:
First u e favor honest and effi
cient administration of the depart
ments of government both State and
National.
Second The right of the citizen
authorized by law, and to have his
vote honorably tounted, ought to be
respected and all efforts to control r
limit tliat rig tit reserves tiie con
demnation of all good citizens.
Third That while disclaimin mis
right to interfere with the adm iur
tration of the internal affairs of ove
eigh nations, we sincerely appr
l the efforts of Irish and English
1 statesmen to secure by peaceful
methods the American principal of
i "Home Rule" for Ireland.
! Fourth That we are in favor of
such legislation as should prohibit
nd punish the manufacture of adul
ij terated foods.
i Fifth That we are in favcr of the
enactment of a law by Congress,
wheieby the homestead and pre-emption
rights of settlers shall not lie
forfeited by cancellation of filings by
the land department when settlement
1 or filings are made in good faith.
Sixth That we f ivor the encDur
agement and development of our
S?ate by the construction of railroads
and other systems of transportation
and that we hold all corporations to
be strictly responsible to their liabil
ities under the law, and recognize the
right of the Legislature to enact all
reasonable limitations on corporate
power.
Seventh That we regard the
farther immigration into the United
States of Chinese laborers as directly
opposed to the interests of American
labor; and we therefore heartily ap
prove the action of the Republican
Senate in providing by proper legis
ation for so amending our treaties j
' "with China as to prevent their fur-1
ther immigration here. j
Eighth We recognize that the '
nation owes a debt to the surviving '
veterans ot the rebellion wnich can
not be adequately repaid, and hold-to
to be the duty of the general govern
ment to provide for the necessities of
them and theirs by prompt payment
of liberal pensions.
Ninh Tiiat the action of Presi
dent Cleveland in ordering the return
of the rebel Hags was an unwarranted
assumption of the right to use tor
political purposes the trophies of a
valor he did not po:-scs and the
fruits of a victory he did not help to
secure.
Tenth While we approve everv
henest effort to preserve oar public i
lands by the punishment of willful j
trespasses upon tuoni. ana are in
favor. t such measures as will en
courage our citizens to settle upon
anu improve them, we cond sun the

Democratic administration, which
would place wool and lumber on the
free list and woolen goods on the j

the free list, and other similar arti

Twelfth We favor the policy of
providing, chiefly 1 r the revenues of
the general government and for the
purposes essential t the genera! gov
ernment, a system of cities levied
ttpon imports so adjusted as to dis
criminate in favor of domestic indus
tries and productions and in favor of
American labor, and we declare in
f ivor of reducing the annual surplus
levinues of the lovernment by ad
mittin gfree of dmy such articles of
general use as cannot be largely pro
duced or manufactured by our own
people.
Thirteenth That we deprecate the
attempts of the D mocrati; adminis
tration to degrade the honest toil of
An.erica to a level with the pander
labor of the cl 1 world.
Fourteenth We denounce and do-

plorethe refusal of President Cleve
land to approve the river and harbor
bill, and we denounce the action or
the Secetary of War in what seo.ns
to be a studied attempt to delay t'nc
improvement of the Columbia rivtr:
and fully recognizing tlie importance
of our great waterways as regulators
of freight charges, no; only on the
waterways themselves but on the
railroads as well, we insist that our
groat rivers should be free and open
to the sea, and jwe demand of the
general government need of appro
priations the.-efor. At the same
lime .ve recommend the next Legis
lature to take proper and adequate
steps to insist at once in opening the
great river to general commerce.
Lastly VVe denounce the civil
service reform professions of Presi
dent Cleveland as a sham and fraud,
as promises made to secure votes be
fore election, and the violations of
which has been as constant as the
hunger of the Democratic ollice-seek-ers
could demand.
