One of tle most unique and
t'n.M:it auciai events mac nas
.1,
transpired in this city during the
season occurred at the Opera house
last evening. Company "F" ap
peared on dress parade and drill
and e.xhil iced a perfection in ap
jearance and in maneuver
that was truly pleasing. At its
conclusion Miss Mary Irvine ap
peared with a snjerh specimen of
our revered sta s and stripes, and
in the following patriotic and beau
tiful words presented the flag, on
nehalf of the ladies of Albanv, to
Company "F" :
j It is not necessary to give utter
ance to sentiments of esteem Jand
regard in order that, our friends
may know that such feclins exist
in our thoughts. These are com
municated by means of an unwrit
ten language. They are expressed
without artificial characters. They
are known before they are ever re
duced to words ; and yet from time
beyond mention it has been the
custom to give expression to feel
ings of esteem and deep regard by
means of titling tokens as symbols
ot appriciative thought. The la
dies of Albany, with characteristic
observing powers, have noted with
pride the neat uniform in which
Company ".F" has occasionally ap
peared. Feelings of safety are
awakened in looking upon the
complete stand of arms with which
the state has supplied the compa
ny. In commenting upon the mar
tial appearance of their own sons,
feelings of patriotism have been
stirred to freshness of life and the
desire has been awakened to give
formal expression to their apprecia
tion ot tiie service upon which you
have entered and the devotion to
your country's cause which you are
manifesting. In noticing the en
tire absence from your ranks of tba1
tricolored emblem of our national
life, they have conceived the idea
of giving expression to their senti
ments toward you by presenting
you with this fami'iar emblem. It
is the same old flag tiiat stirred to
life the patriotism of '7t. That
tired with devotion the heroes who
gave iheii lives in defense of free
dom. On the north and on tiie
south of our country it has more
than once waved in triumph over
opposition. In the midst of civil
conflict, through fire and smoke
and baptism of blood, it has main
tained its way. God grant that in
undisturbed peace its folds may
j lie ever and always borne upon tiie
breeze. But should unseen danger
j awake the bugle call, while in the
freshness of your manhood you
: stand in your ranks, we trust that
! the same manly courage, the same
! noble sel - acritice, the same un
; compromising courage, will iuspire
your hearts and nerve your ener
gies to do and dare what our fore
fathers did.

Hon. John F. Swift addressed
about 400 people at the court house
Saturday evening. Mr. Swift was
advertised to speak in O'Brien's

and so all that could get inside of!
the court house adjourned to that

place. Mr. switt's speech was re- j
garded as able and logical, even ; ,
by the democrats. He fully ex-!

of Mr. Irish in regard to the wool !
question. Mr. Swiftindulged in no
demagogism, but all through was
plain and practical.

grain in all that region worth
harvesting.
The flouring mills at Prineville
are lying idle, and will remain so
during the season. Even bread
and seed wheat, Mr. Allen states,
will have to be shipped into the
country.
The hay crop is also almost a
failure, and altogether the busi

are yery gloomy. Stock is suffer

is feared unless they get rain soon
the stockmen will experience
much loss from this source.
