scrutinized the uills of the Linn
county officials thereby preventing
them from making extravagant
charges in their biils.
Mr. Irvine, was introduced and j
stated that before beginning to speak i
he wished to make an apology to Mr, I
Myers. He said that yesterday he I
had stated .hat it was very evident j
from Mi. Myers speech that he had
never read a law nor seen a law
book. He had. he Slid, upon reflect
ion come to the conclusion that Mr.
Myara had seen tiie outbide
ot a law book. He therefore wished
to apologize to Mr. Myers for his
statement of yesterday.

by ono Ir. Win. Eisen. A large
Lumber of physicians are in at
tendance on the trial as witnesses.
The defendant claims to have ad
ministered the morphine in a seri
ous case of gastric fever and by the
advice of a consulting physician.
This is the fir.-t case tried under
the new law reijuiring physieiatis
to obtain a permit for the adminis
tering of opium. There seems to
be considerable animus in the case.
Dr. Ounderson may be a regular
physician, but he. is juite irregular
in the paym -nt of his bills, as sev
eral persons in this city have found
out to their sorrow.

The three regimental Hugs order
ed for the three regiments of
Oregon national guards have been
received by Adjutant-General
Shofner. The flags of the First
and Third regiments are at the
armory, that of the Second having
Wen fur warded to the command
ing officer. The flags are uniform
in every respect and very beautiful.
They are ot" regulation size, are
made ef blue silk with the arms of
the state embroidered In the center,
with the regiment to which each
belongs beneath. There will be no
formal presentation of the flag ot
the First regiment. The ceremony
prescribed in the tactics, that ot
escorting the colors to the head o'
the column, wili be carried out on
Decoration Day.

Our correspondent at Koseburg
sends us information that politics
is livelier there than at any other
point in Oregon. Douglas county
is the headquarters ot the third
party movement, and so upon the
arrival of Hon. J. W. Watts there
last Tuesday, h was challenged
through the republican central
committee to a joint discussion.
This the committee accepted, and
next Friday evening it will take
place. If there is a point in pol
itics that the doctor is fully con
versant with it is the third party
question, and if his opponents are
not completely "snowed under,"
it will be for the reason that they
beat a retreat. j
