THE ILEKALT). WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, ..1888.
REPUBLICAN PLATFCJ-M.
We, your committee on Platfor
and Kesolutioas beg leave to repor
as follows:
The Republicans in the State of
Ore"on, iu convention assembled, re
affirming their allegiance to, and con
fidence in, the great Republican
party, of the nation, of whose erand
achievements and long and success
ful administration of the government
of 'the United Strtes they have so
much cause to be proud, and the
glory of which they are entitled to
sliow, row make and present the fol
lowit.rr statement of their principles
and policy : 1
First We favor honest and e'.i- j
dent administration of the depart- I
rnents ot government both State and i
Nation:'.'.' j
Second The right of the citizen i
authorial by nv, and to h we his j
vote !i:in-a!ly tonntt-d, ought to be!
respectt-d and nil eifrts to control r
limit that right deserves the con
demuation of all good citizens.
Third That while disclaimin
right to interfere with the adminis
tration of the internal affairs of for
eign nations, we sincerely approve
the efforts of Irish and English
statesmen to secure by peaceful
methods the American principal of
"Home Rule" for Ireland.
Fourth That we are in favor of
such legislation as should prohibit
and punish the manufacture of adul
terated foods.
Fifth That we are in favcr of the
enactment of a law by Congress,
whereby the homestead and pre-emption
rights of settlers shall not be
forfeited by cancellation of filings by
toe land department when settlement
or filings are made in good faith.
Sixth That we fwor the encour
agement and development of our
State by the construction of railroads
and other systems of transportation
and that we hold all corporations to
be strictly responsible to their liabil
ities under the law, and recognize the
right of the Legislature to enact all
reasonable limitations on corporate
power.
Seventh That we regard the
further immigration into the United
States of Chinese laborers as directly
opposed to the interests of American
labor; and we therefore heartily ap
prove the action of the Republican
Senate in providing bv proper legis
lation for so amending our treaties
with China as to prevent their fur
ther immigration here.
Eighth We recognize that the j
' nation owes a debt to the Surviving ,
veterans of the rebellion which can j
not be adequately repaid, and hold-to I
tn he- t-.liH rhitv of the ueneral aovern--,
ment to provide for the necessities of
them and theirs by prompt payment
of liberal pensions.
Ninh--That the action of Presi
dent Cleveland in ordering the return
f the rebel fl.-i.s was an unwarranted
assumptiou of the right to use tor j

valor he did not possess and the
fruits of a victory he did not help to
spoil re.
Tenth While we approve every j
ncnest etiort to preserve our public
lauds by the punishment of willful
trespasses upcii them, and are m
favor of such measures as will en
courage our citizens to settle upon
anu improve them, we condemn the
action of the present administration

dishonesty, having for its sole object j
the success of the Democratic party ,
at the next election, even at the ex- !
pense of the j radical destruction of i
many of our most important agricul-
turalani manufacturing industries, j
Twelfth We favor the policy of '
providing, chielly icr the revenues of ;
the general government and for the '
ourposes essential to the general gov- ,
ernment, a system of cities levied
upon imports so adjusted as to dis- .
criminate in favcr of domestic indus- '

American labor, and we declare in
favor of reiuie'.ug the annual surplus :

Amerifia to a lev.;! with t.ie pauper
labor of the old world. i
fourteenth We uenoiracc and de- j
plore the refusal of President Cleve
land to approve the river and harbor
bill, and we denounce the action o!
the Sec etary of War in what seems
to be a studied attempt to delay the
improyement of the Columbia river:
and fully recognizing the importance
of our great waterways as regulators
of freight charges, not otdy on tin
waterways themselves but on tin
railroads as well, we insist that oui
great rivers should be free and open
to the sea, and twe demand of the
general government need of appro
priations therefor. At the same
time we recommend the uext Legis
lature to take proper and adequate
steps to insist at once in opening the
great river to general commerce.
Lastly We denounce the civd
service reform professions of Presi
dent Cleveland as a sham aud fraud,
as promises made to secure votes be
fore election, and the violations of
which has been as constant as toe
hunger of the Democratic oihee-seek-
ers could demand.

THE MARKETS.
The price of wheat has been
steadilv advancing, and the tone
of the market is now more hope
ful than at any recent period. A
pool of 7000 bushels was sold yes-,
terdav at the Fanners' warehouse
for 65) cents. Rut little over one
i'ourth "of the wheat crop has yet
been sold, but if prices continue to
advance the bulk of the crop is
likely to soon move.
