Democratic platform of 1886:
"We favor a tariff for revenue,
limited to the necessities of the
government, economically admin
istered; but as any tariff for rev
enue must of necessity afford some
protection incidentally, we, there
fore, favor such an adjustment as
to nrevent uneaual burdens and
encourage the production of jn.
Castries at home, and to afford just
compensation to labor, but not to
create or foster monopolies; There
fore!, as a matter of justice, the
wool-growing interests of the coun
try should receive the same benefit
from a tariff as the manufacturers
of woolen goods ; and we condemn j
the action of a republican congress in
reducing the tariff on wool and in in
ereasing the tariff on woolen goods."
Democratic platform of 1888:
"Resolved, That we most earnestly
of tariff revision, and a reduction
of the surplus revenue to the needs
of the government, economically
administered, as set forth in the
president's last annual message to.
congress." Which message recom
mf tided the placing of wool on the free
IM.
The only cause that can be
ascribed for this radically opposed
sentiment is that Cleveland is try
ing to bulldoze the farmers of Ore
gon, and has done so to the extent
of securing the services of John P.

receives protection? If it was
right two years ago that the wool

protected and fostered, it is cer
tainly right now, and we believe
the voters of Oregon will eo decide
next June.
Voters of Oregon should not

ministration in securingthe making
of the Chinese treaty, and the fact
that its ratification crowns the
achievement of this administra

its relations to American industry,
and to the integrity and progress
of our civilisation. State Rights
Democrat.
But it ought to be stated at the
same time that the only measure
which offered any material benefit
to the people of the Pacific coast,
and especially Oregon, was the bill
appropriating funds for the im
provement of our rivers and
harbors, which bill Mr. Cleveland
vetoed.
The state and county elections
-will be over in a trifle more than
two weeks, and in the lull of pol
itics between that jieriod and the
warming up of the presidential
campaign Albany ought to improve

for sheriff. He is well known in
this city as a capable ana soui;

Ox the subject of the duties cf:
American citizens in the exercioe i
of the elective franchise, the New j
York Tribune truthfully says:'
"There are native-born Americans, j
and not a few, with shame be it
said, who neglect ever' duty of
citizenship; who think it refined
and aristocratic to take no part in
public affairs, and to talk ot politics
as filthy. To some of them it does
not seem at all degrading to make
a living by gambling in products
or securities, by grinding the faces
of the poor as employers, by own
ing and renting tenements which
are breeders of pestilence. liutitis
beneath them to take any part in
the government of the country.
Are these people Americans?
Once more, the honest truth is
that they are less fit to govern the
country than any immigrant who
comes because he knows some
thing of American freedom and
desires it. The very day that im
migrant lands he is a more useful
citizen than the British dude of
the American who thinks it digni
fied to shirk his civic duties."
And still you find no greater
growler over the shortcomings of
the government than these same
gentlemen who are too fine, too
aristocratic to do their plain and
unequivocal duty in the premises.
The Albany Board of Trade is
now fully organized and ready for
business. Much will depend upon
placing the right men on the im
portant committees, especially the
advertising committee. It wants
men in these places who are un
usually energetic and who will
