new First National Bank
building in this city will be one of
the finest inisbed buildings in the
state. The work is under the su
pervision of Mr. D. C. Shell, and

from Portland, Oregon, to the
Rockford, Illinois, Register, con
tains a sample of the missionary
work that is being done in the
East by some of our Portland
friends. After enumerating the
advantages and extensive business
of Portland, and the wealth of the
Sound country, the communication
sayp :
"There is a large amount of fine
agricultural land "in the Willamette
Valley, but the laziest of farmers
in the United Staies. They do not
even make their own butter and
take no care of their orchards.
Once on a time, they received i 15
a box for appies and since tney
dropped below $5 they have left
them to rot. These people mostly
settled in the valley in 1854. Most
of their farms, which consists of
040 acres, are mortgaged to Port
land bankers, and they are almost
the sole owners of one of the most
fertile valleys of Oregon. Sixty
bushels of wheat per acre is a usual
crop upon it. These bankers are
in no hurry to let these lands get
into other hands and are thus hold
ing back the growth of Portland."

swing himself onto the car, but
here is where he miscalculated,
and, missing his JJfooting, the mo
mentum rf the moving train pre
cipitated him under the last mov
ing wheels, which past over both
legs, severing them from his body.
Just what his condition is could
not be learned, but his chances for
life were considered veiy slim.
The injured young man is a son
of ex-Congressman Lafayette Lane,
is aDout twenty years ot age and is
considered a very bright young
man. Yet even his biiglilness
does not save him from teaching a
great temperance lesson to the
masses, lie is "a cousin of Dr.
Harry Lane, superintendent of the
asvlum.

sociation will hold a meeting in
the hall of the Portland Volunteer
Fiiemen's Association. Second and
Oak streets, at 2 p. m. to-day to ar
range details for the tournament
which will be held in that citv on

firemen expect that nine teams will
participate in the tournament.
