The Democrat, after accusing
County Clerk J. P. Galbraith and
Sheriff D. S. Smith of being pre
vented from defrauding Linn coun
ty by J. J. Whitney, ought either
to have made a square retraction
and an acknowledgement of false
hood, or have said nothing. The
attempt at ''correction" made in
iat evening's Democrat was an in
sult those officials. The editor of
the Democrat perhaps knew, but
"did not care to say, that, the reason
Marion county's sheriff and clerk's
fees are larger than Linn's is that
criminals from Linn and Polk
counties and elsewhere are often
taKeit' to Salem for safe keeping
and trial, and the sheriff there gets
paid for it ; also that the sheriff
there performs the larger part of
the constable's duties; but the
Demociat preferred to accuse the
officials there of dishonesty, and
took occasion to attempt to make

'Democrat" Accuses Capable Officials of j
aa Attempt to DaVaad the County
The
State Rights Democrat o
in its tes;re to m ami-
facture cheap political capita! , has j
trone to the extent of insinuating i
that the sheriff and clerk of Linn
county, both staunch democrats,
have only been prevented from
robbing the county treasury by the
superhuman efforts of J. J . Whit-
t lir , liicndii- ifi;utltv juuiic
This of course is dune through a
desire to make votes for Judge
Whitney, but such a dishonest and
shameful piece of business w.ll not
be tolerated by the intelligent
voters of Linn county.
The article referred to pretends
to be a comparison of the volume
of the business in the sheriff's
office of Linn and Marion counties,
and after swelling the amount of
sheriff's fees in Marion count' by
adding costs in the Saunders ami
Mattie Allison cases, which were
actually paid by Linn county, the
Democrat makes this stunning
statement :
"No other accounting for this re
man.able discrepancy can be made
except that Judge 'Vintner ha con
stantly kept a continual watch upon
the financial interests of the county.
The amount paid the sheriff in Maiio'i
makes things look ' spinous at least,
both for the court and sheriff. Let
the voters of Linn be glad that their
interests have been so safely guarded
by Judge Whitney."
This in the face of the statement
that this same alleged robbery
would have occurred in Linn
had it not been for the j
continual watchfulness ot Judge
Whitrev. can only be taken us a I
direct accusation against'.!. P. G.il
braith, county clerk, and D. S,
Smith, sheritf'of the county.
If Judge Whitney is the instigat
or of this article he ought to be
resigned to obloquy for attempting
to make a showing of economy by
imputing dishonest motives to
capable officials of his own party,
or if the article containing the at
tack was simply the the efferves-
cense of the editor of the Democrat
Mr. Whitney ought to rise and ex
plain. SEKIOtS ttdilltl At' CI.

While Hunting Near Scio,
Information was received in this
city yesterday morning of a serious

loaded shells. One of the shells
became ignited from the fire in the
pipe and exploded, shooting off one
of ids fingers and inflicting a
serious wound in the abdomen. It
was thought the brass portion of
the shell was bio a a into the abdo

THE MOPiIXC
Petition for the Eztcssioa
Branch to Sodaville &
ot
f the Lebanon;
Good Scheme.
A petition is being circulated and
Kigneu bv business men
of this city, asking the Southern
Pacific railroad coinoanv to extend ;
the Lebanon branch of the O. & C
railroad to Sodaville, a distance of
32 miles.
The soda springs at Sodaville are
fast becoming a popular summer
I resort, and the travel thitherward
from different parts of the country
is large. The extension of the
Lebanon branch to that place
would be attended by no difficulties
and light jxpense, as the country
is level and there are no streams
to cross. The advantage gained
would be mutual, as people from
all par's of the country could go
and come when they pleased by
rail direct, connecting at this city
with either the O. fe C. or the Or
egon Pacific trains, and the traffic
of that branch would be greatly
increased, as a rich country would
be brought into railroad communi
cation with the city, and the crowds
of people who visit these springs
would form a lively passenger
business.
It is a desirable undertaking and
the branch ought to be built, and
probably will be.
The question of constructing a
branch of the Narrow Gauge line
from Spicer to this city is also
being agitated. The Xarrow Gauge
in the upper portion of the valley
is now practically useless and this
would make it of some advantage
to the people along the route, and
would add somewhat to the busi
ness of Linn's metropolis.
