well known citizen of Marion coun
ty, residing six miles south of this
place, died suddenly at the resi

son, in this city this afternoon of

of ore from the mine of Messrs.
Read, Woodin & Co. on the head
waters of the Santiam near the
famous Blue river mining region.

amounting to $200 per ton. This i
of course cannot be taken as an '
average lot of rock, for it would
make 10,000 per ton in gold, a !
fabulous amount. But the rock is
pronounced very rich in both gold
and silver. The mine will be vig

The institute was called to order
by Mr. Herron, and in the ab
sence of the regular officers H. W.
Herron was chosen cnairman and
W. A. McGhee secretary. Mr. Z.
T. Tnielove and Miss Minnie Mc
Fariand were appointed crtic?.
"i tie subject of "Primary Read
ing" was introduced by Mr. Butt,
lie said reading should be taught
while the child is young and the
organs tender and flexible. Pro
nouncing words is not reading.
Mr. Hunt said that a teacher
should tell the class what lies be
fore them and how to study the
lesson.
W. A. McGhee said Ids method
was to require the pupii to repeat
what was read. Mr. Truelove
would assign the class a lesson and
get out of it what was involved in
the subject. Mr. Hunt does not
believe in the reretit.on of sen
tences, but requires the pupils to
narrate the story read.
Several other speakers followed,
and the different methods were
well discussed. .
A humorous recitation was given
by Master Roy Brewer.
AFTERNOON" SESSIONS
The Tangent band called the
teachers together with excellent
music.

Mr. McGhee was caned to the
chair.
H. W. Herron took the floor and
presented the subject of "Primary
Arithmetic." There are two ex
tremes, he said, in teaching arith
metic the one is to start the lit
tle folks in a large book, the other
to keep them counting and arrang
ing objects, lie womd choose the
golden mean between the two.
The text book he would not use,
but would give lessons from the
blackboard and from slips of pa
per. He illustrated a number of
ways of writing problems on the
blackboard for solution by the pu
pils. He also illustrated ids meth
od by an excellent class drill.
Mr. Hunt spoke in favor ol using
objects freely in the first lessons
until the pupils could count and
combine numbers readily. Mr.
Burt would also use objects, that
being nature's way to tea?h count
ing. Mr. Williams raid that more
depended upon the teacher than
upon the method. The work
should be full of vivacity.
Mr. Russell presented the subject
"Percentage." He would follow
the methods in the book closely.
Mr. Williams illustrated analysis
in per cent age by analyzing a
problem through the various cases.
He also Kpoke a few udiiutes on
teaching compound number, stal
ing that they should be taught ex
perimentally so far as practicable,
and that the pupils should be al
lowed to do much work in measur
ing outside of the school house,
measuring boards, lots, fields, etc.
-Mr. Hunt agreed with the method,
and would extend it to ail the
tables. Mr. Yates would teach the !

A recess of a few minutes was
taken, during which the Tan-cnt
brass band niaved several nieces.
Upon motion of Mr. Mont the
subject of grading public schools
