LABOR'S RECOMPENSE.
The incentives to toil, which
cause human beings to del vein the
avocation of every day life, aie
various Of course it is reasona
ble and just that every individual !
should receive recompense for the
exertions that he puts forth that
he should be paid for the value
.TStfPERANCE K01E3.
Contributed by the l. T. U.
Wewere forcibly struck with the
comparison of Mr. Nash, in his
recent talk at the annual meeting
of the W. C. T. U., between the
teaching of to-day in our public
schools and that of fifty years age.
And we believe that the mightier
agency for temperance, as well as
other education, is in our public
schools; particularly is this true
where scientific tdmperance in
struction is made by law a part of
the curriculum. Our law requires
that in all schools supported by
public moLey, physiology be taught
with special reference to alcoholic
drinks, stimulants and narcotics.
By careful watchfulness on the
part of our superintendents of this
department, this law can be en
forced to the letter; for if the
teacher neglects or refuses to
teach the branch he can be re
ported forthw ith and dealt with as
iu any other neglect of duty.
Therefore our superintendents
should visit the schools and ascer
tain if proper instruction i3 given
in this important subject, for if
enforced the good effects of the
law are incalculable. It is the
belief of the majority of our think
ers that the only solution of the
temperance problem is in the edu
cation of the masses. The people
are slow to act for want of knowl
edge. We should not neglect tin
opportunity to press this matter in
i our public schools.
The Lewiston (Me.,) Journal of
a recent date says : "All the loan
that he creates by his indu-Hnsl ' and building associations m Maine
exertions. But that reconipe:i.-e j are flourishing finely. And they
can come in many other ways ' doing a splendid work for
than by the actual reception of the
coin that passes as the commercial
medium of exchange.
For instance to very many the per
fection of the results of their labor
is the only recompense they receive
and is received as fully satisfactory.
The mother that devotes her life to
laboriously building up a happy
and harmonious home circle and
family is fully recompensed in the
successful accomplishment of that
object, for the many weary, toiling
years that have led to its attain
ment. The artist who chisels the
mirble statue, or paints the famous
pijtuje, is. generally more recom
pensed by the knowledge of the
success- of the work than by the
. actual pay that he receives.
The satisfaction of knowing that
the life work has been a success,
th -t the object sought for ha? been
atuined, is, jierforce, all the rec-

i wer and fame that lelongs to
Maine in keeping our money at
home and building homes with it.
This is the sort of 'ruin' which
prohibition brings to Maine. It
could be endured by other state in
the union with great complacency."
Forty counties besides 208 magis
terial districts of Kentucky, five
eighths of the entire state, are
under local prohibition.

Every housekeeper knows from experience the hard labor requii ;d to wash
floors and wring the cloths by hand. By using the Newton self-wrijging floor
cleaner, wringing the cloth by hand is avoided, the h-trd labor is thereby les
sened; the hands do not come in contact with the water, whereby you can use
boiliiur and ammonia water. The N'cwton self-wringing floor cle ner is light,
durable and simple in construction, and well merits the claim of being the
best invented. Special vhIhs to canvasser? and the usual discount to the
