THE SCIENTIFIC FJlONTj77i.
In the great advance made in
science an I art, daring the past
century, a wonderful record i a
been made, and the achievements
re apt to give us the opinion that
our learning is something not only
phenomenal, but bordering on
perfection.
When, however we take a proper
view of the case we will iieivtvwiU
come to the conclusion
that we
know but very little.
The action and effects of the
f jjrces of nature are constantly be
coming more and more familiar to
.is, and it is on this line that mos
of our progress has been made ; bu
as to the nature of the foices then
selves we are still ignorant. The
constitution of the matter has been
a subject of dispute from the time
Aristotle, and it is not too mu h
io say that we have no more ab.
solute knowledge on this point than
had Aristotle himself. Starting
irom the supposition that matter is
not continous, but made of discon
nected atoms Or particles of dt finitrf
size and weight, a most beamifui
, theory has been evolved which
! perfectly explains all the obstrv d
fj chemical and physical phenomena ;
' but what chemist will venture tu
maintain the atomic theory as an
actual and provaLl fact, in the
face of the many difficulties which
uch a conception of matter invol
ves? The nature of light and heat
another question which' is even
more difficult to answer than the
, constitution of matter. They are
I certainly immaterial, possesssing
neither weight nor volume. The
modern taeory considers them as a
force, or mode of vibratory motion
in a hypothetical substance called
ether. But the existence of the
ether has never been proved ; and,
in fact, if it does exist, it must
possess properties varying widely
from any forms of matter with
which we are acquainted. All
t'.iat can be said is, that, granting
its' existence, the phenomena cf
light and heat admit cf a ready
explanation. Electricity is an
' other substance concerning the
nature of which we know absolut
ely nothing. To the question,
What is electricity ? there is but
one answer, We do not know. We
uo know what it
Will do, and
can make it answer, We do not
know. We do know what it will
do, and cau make it serve us in an
infinite variety of ways ; but the
most learned electrician is only in
I the same position as that of a lit
tle child who can move the lever
which controls a great engine, but
knows nothing of its construction,
or how the motion is produced.
Chemical affinity offers a multi
tude of perplexing questions which j
as yet no one can answer. Why
does the oxygen of water leave the
hydrogen to which it is joined, to
unite. with the. sodium which is
brought irj contact, with it? Why
are the proportion in . which the
d fferent elements unite among
k themselves fixed and invariable?
Why does flourine combine so
strongly with . every known ele
ment but ; one, . while nitrogen,
when forced into combination, con
fers an element of weakness upon
the entire compound? No one as
yet has answered these and in
numerable similar questions. But
the greatest mystery of all, and no
one of which we know the least, is j
that of the nature of life and mind, j
-There is no appreciable difference
--between a mass of dead
matter. It is only m the po
bilites inherent in the two forms
that we can recognize the differ-

be likely to mistake one process cf

immense mammoth down to the
microscopic bacterium or plant
spore, all ara possessed of some
thing we call life, which, as long
as it exists, possesses the power of
reproducing organisms similar to it
self. We can, apparently, destroy
this mysterious principle, but we
can not bring it back ; and it is not
probable that, in our present, con
dition of existence, we shall ever
know auything more regarding it.
Some patient student of nature
may be able in future years to
give us absolute proof of what
matter, light, electricity, and
chemical affinity really are ; but he
who succeeds in imparting to the
minutest quantity of dead matter
the wonderful vital force will have
accomplished a greater and more
wonderful wook than all who
have preceded him, and one which
as far as we can see at present, is
beyond the range of human possi
bility. What then do we really know of
the silent but most potent forces oi
nature. Simply nothing. We can
evoke their operation and stand
like the untutored child in open
mouthed wonder to viw the
phenomena ; yes we can become,
by familiarity with the workings of
these forces even imbued with an
idea that we can master them,
but tiie first step out of the beaten
paths of former experiment dem-
ostrates our entire ignorance in the
premises.
Editor Stites, of the State
Rights Democrat, who sat on the
front row and cheered St. John so
loudly during his recent harangue
in this city, seemingly imagines
j that he and the other apostle from
the grasshopper state have given
the Hekald an "awful licking."
It is a significant fact that Stites
has been talking so much in favor
of St. John and his third party
that in reply to pointed inquiries
he is forced to explain in the last
issue of that paper that he is not a
prohibitionist. Certain prominent
democrats will be pleased to hear
this. They had even expressed
the belief that if he would consoli
date ihi Democrat with the War
Cry and run a strict third party pa
per, it might acquire some in
fluenee.

Newtoo Self-frinit Floor Cleaner !
THE OLD WAY
Every housekeeper knows from experience the hard labor requii :d to wash
floors and wring the cloths by hand. By using the Newton self-wrusriug floor
cleaner, wringing the cloth by hand is avoided the hard labor is thereby les
sened; the hands do not come in contact with the water, whereby you caii use
boiling and ammonia water. The Newton self-wringing floor clef nor is light,
durable and simple in construction, and well merits the claim of beinjr the
best invented. Special vat"- to canvasser? and the usual discount to the
trade. Manufactured and sold by
