L.EiE A.D SMALL FARMS.
A
C.-iat with Br. Maston About His BJg
Purchase-8mall Tracts for Newcomers,
Dr. G. W. Maston, who has pur
chased the 409 acre farm of .Mrs.
L. A. ilcConnell, near this city,
was asted yesterday bv a Herald
reporter what object" he had in
purchasing that valuable place.
The doctor, who was enveloped
in a long linen ulster and had a
driving whip in his hand, said, "I
am just now wing out to go over
tte land, and it is my intention to
divide it up in small tracts and
place it upon the market to meet
the steadily increasing demand for
small places.
"Many newcomers who arrive
from tne East," he continued,
want to purchase land, but in t.vo
many instances the farms in Linn
county which are for sale consist
of several hundred acres, and it re
quires a small fortune to purchase
one of them, and the result is that
men with moderate means who
want to slop here and purchase a
small quantity of good land near
the city cannot do so. I propose
divide the land into small tracts to
suit puTshaseis who will build neat
residences upon the same.
"That there is a largs demand
for Buch places," he said, "is shown
from the fact that since I bought it
on Monday, I have had several
offers from those wanting small
tracts."
If many other of the large farms
about Aloany were treated as Dr.
Maston proposes to treat his di
vided up and sold to newcomers
who want a small piece of land,
build a neat home upon it, it
would be of advantage to the
country. It is such things that
help to make the city and country
boom.

from the East. Monday Governor
Pennoyer and Col. Elliott held a
conferrenee. The governor de
cided to appoint a swamp land
agent to act in conjunction with
Col. Elliott. It will be remem
bered that the work was well un-
der way ast year and when the I
weather became inclement in the
Fall it was abandoned. It is a
well known fact that much of the
land that has been taken up as
swamp and overflowed land was
never wet save by the rains and
dews of heaven. The commission
ers will examine this disputed
land and report on its character.
It is thought the commissioners
will begin work in the vicinity ' of

THE EXIEKALD LAND.
Kow a California! Journalist; ;Iii3cant3 on
ths Charms and Advantages of Oregon.
It is greatly to the interest of
Californians to have a large popu
lation in Oregon and Nevada. Ore
gon must supply us soon with im
portant and necessary commercial
productions which we will c jase to
create tor our selves. The two
states will be tributary to each
other, generating a mutual pros
perity. Oregon lias a c limate soft
and salubrious by contrast with
that of the LaA, and soil that is
unrivaled lor standard crops.
There is plenty of arable land,
majestic timber, mineral resources
not half developec", and above all
the opportunity to buy at moderate
figures. These allurements are
not lost upon the rest ol l he coun
try, and backed by a nearly wel
come to the new coiner, they will
speedily second what nature has
done for the founding ot a great
American commonwealth.
Joaquin Miller's characteriza
tion of Oregon as the 'Emerald
Land" has been seized upon by
the Eastern prss, for it implies a
land where gra. s rows and water
runs, and is a.-sociated with ver
dure and foliage, with sun ana
snaue.
All tastes are not the same, and
it is a happy promise of the sym
metrical development of these
coast states that their good qual
ities so complement each other as
to be attractive to a great diversity
of tastes. In ciimate they run
from dry to humid, anJ in produc
tions they cover the great area
between the two extremes.
The men who traversed the long
Oregon trail forty years ago were
the pioneers of a great civilzation.
Thev were to the Argonauts who
made early California what the ad
venturous settlers in the Wyoming
valley and along the blue Juniata
were to the commercial Knicker
bockers who settled New York.
We speak of the Middle States now
as a group allied in interest and
progress working out the same des
tiny and greatly interdependent.
The Pacific States are to be another
family group like that, with a pop
ulation which will balance the cen
sus of the two sides of the conti
nent. Therefore, we say to the im
' migrant: "If you dont see what
you want in California, ask for it in
Oregon ; and if you don't see what
you want in Oregon, ask for it in
California or Nevada." Alta-Cali-fornian.
