republican state convention from
Linn county returned home yesterday.

j angry. Lackland had boarded
j with the Indiar agent, J. B. Lane,
i and they blamed him for the
! whole affair. Finally their wrath
was nursed to such a degree that
they gave Agent Lane peremptory
notice to leave the reservation. To
avoid trouble Mr. Lane left for
Portland with the intention of re
turning to investigate the matter.
The Indians also notified Miss iiat
tie Hansell, a highly respeeted
young lady, who was engaged in
teaching on the reservation, to
leave, and yesterday she quit the
reservation and started lor her
home in Portland.
It is stated ihat certain white men
i who were opposed to Mr. Lane as
agent, have been assisting toward
I inciting the Indians to their pres
I ent action.

Hiram Smith, of Harrisburg. Mr.
Smith was born and lived thirty
two years of his life in Missouri,
his birth dating back to 1821. He
crossed the plains to Oregon in tne
early fifties, and settled in Linn
county, where he has principally
resided. In 1863 he moved to
Harrisburg and shortly after enter
ed the nierchantile business. He
was a candidate for congress in
1873, and was several times dele
gate to the national republican
convention. He .vas well known
ail over the state and lias been
much in public affairs. He was
married in 1848 to Mary E. Flem
ing, who survives him. They had
no children. Mrs. Smith resides
on the old home estate.

shooting scrape occurred near
Summit Lake yesterday between
A. M. Bentley and I. V. Hitch
cock, farmers, which resulted in
the death ot the latter. It is un
derstood that the shooting grew
out of an old feud. Bentley came
here after the killing and surren
dered. At the jail he stated that
he went out with his rifle intending j
to drive some stray stock out of his J
grain field, and met Hitchcock and j
another man. Hitchcock was arm
ed with a shotgun. Bentley says !
as soon as the men saw him Hitch- j
cock tired and missed him. Bet- j
ley returned the tire and Hitchcock j
fell, and as he still moved Bentley j
says, fearing he might tire again,!

tinct shocks of earthquake were
felt heie this morning at about a
quarter past live. They were of

ers and rattle the windows. The
