The progress of society is not in
a' straight line, leading farther
away from the starting point; nor
-is it around a circle, continually
passing over the same ground. It
"is rather like a spiral, whose sin
tias curve is always going through
the same social latitude as the pre
ceding cycle, but at a higher longi
tude. It does uot proceed through
absolutely new fields, but simply
through "new parts of the old
fields. It is atways opposite to
some point of former attainment,
but commands a more extended
view and embraces a more com
prehensive situatian. Some travel
ers along this highway look on.y
to the right, and consequently are
impressed only with the recurrence
of old scenes, therefore concluding i

straight line constantly away from
the ii.itial point. But there are
home who look both to the right
and to the left, and appreciate
the true nature of the course, the
true natu-e of the curve.
Every now and then the car of
stcial progress swings around
through the fields of agriculture,
among the tillers f the soil, the
"real bred-winners. Each success
ive cycle finds them mora enligb -eoetl
and more ambitous. Each
successive round has found the
farmer standing upon a higher
j(ne, possessing broader intellect
ualities, nobler purposes, in the
same latitude, but in a higher
Jojagitude. No calling ever re
ceiTed more rapid advancement
than that of farmers in the recent
:asr. More general education has
eiven them more general capacity.
Learning has made thera more
tl-.irsty and more ambitious. Or
Sanized association has given them
broader notions of social relations
And governmental conditions. And
when education, learning and as
sociation shall have done as much
for them ps for those in other vo
cations, and tball have made them
intellectual peers witu the rest of
mankind, then the importance of
their industry will suggest, and
the strength t their numbers will
obtain, their rightful promotion.

methods are rid. of their natural
mistakes and trimmed of their
youthful follies; when the quiet
