Conkling'M cur dit ion tiianged much
for the worse last night. He was
buoyed up in the evening bv the
presence of liis wife, whom he had
not been permitted to see fince his
illness became serious. Alter her
departure he sank into a stupor,
from which he could not be aroused
only at long intervals, and then
only to display symptoms of de
lirium.
Dr. Agnew, an eminent oculist,
called at Conkling's residence last
night. At the time of his leaving
the patient seemed to be not much
worse, though his temperature had
risen perceptibly. Dr. Maurice
Barkerisaid lie feared Conkling't
ocular trouble had caused affec
tion of the brain, which raav prove
fatal. '"All I care to sav just now,"
said Dr. Barker, "is" that Mr.
Conkling has had a bad change
within the last twenty-four hours,
and is very poorly indeed. I have
Called in Dr. Hands and Dr De la
Field, and they, in company with
Dr. Agnew and myself, visited the
patient this afternoon at 3:30
o clock."
This evening Conkling's condi
tion is uncnanged. Drs. Sands,
Di la Field, Barker and Agnew
called at Conkling's house and
had a consultation. Dr. Barker, at
the conclusion of the conterenee
said that the patient's condition
was very unpromising. That he
was suffering from inflammation
of the ear, which had extended to
the membranes of the brain, and
probabiliie were that he could
not reco er, though tiiere was a
possibility mat he might 'get well.

Terre Saijte, Ind., April 9.
The state normal school burned,
this morning all except the walls.
Eight hundred pupils were in the
building when the lire broke out,
all of whom escape d without a
scratch. They lost, however, most
of their books and wraps. In pur
suance with the policy of the state
there was no insurance on the
structure. Its cost was $189,00O,of
whicli the city of Terre Santa gave
$80,000, in addition to the grounds.
It was from the steps of this edi
fice that President Cleveland spoke
when he was here last fall. Tem
porary quarters have been secured,
and nearly the students will re
main in the school.

Berlin, April 9 . It is stated to
day that Prince Bismarck has
abandoned his opposition to the
marriage of Prince Alexander,
of Baltenburg, and Princess Vic
toria, having gained certain other
concessions, and that all the dif
ference between the emperor and
Prince Bismarck areoiow settled.

ing description of seal clubbing.
The driving of the fur seal inland
is not uninteresting. A number of
Aluts having gotten between the
aoi . als on the shore most of
them probably asleep and the
water's edge, the latter, awaken
ing and rinding their retreat to the
surf cut off, scramble further up on
the land. The Aleuts, probably a
dozen in number, form a sort of
funnel-shaped skirmish Jine and
approached the animals, that keep
retiring before them. To prevent
their being overheated by exertion,
which might affect the skin if not
immediately stripped from the
slain animal, they are seldom
driven much faster than half a
mile an hour, and often al'owed to
rest. As far as possible the selec
tion is made from male animals
about three or four years old, when
the fur is the prime; but as the
maximum of strength and bellig
erency is not reached for a few
years after this it is easy to see
why the best animals for fur have
not the best places on the rook -eries.
but are found skulking off
by themselves, so numerous are
they and so easy to drive to the
killing grounds that the Aleuts
have no trouble in securing the
whoie 100,000 in a week or ten
days over a months time. There
is an object in hurrying the work,
as the skins are better earlier in
the season, bat if their be much
warm weather during this time the
driving is slower and all the other
work is correspondingly retarded.
The seals having cooled off for
to or three hours they are killed
in herds of about one hundred and
fifty strong by i striking them on
the head with peculiarly sharped
clubs made particularly . for this
purpose. If the day is warm thev
skin the animals rapidly, killing
but a few at a time, but if coid
they can kill even a thousaui er so
before beginning work in taking
the skina. It takes about five
minutes to skin a seal, a work that
is very severe, although in cas,es it
has been done by very active men
in a minute and a half.
