ARE
WE IN BETTER CONDITION.
John Coxseb will be the next
sheriff of Linn county. We say
this not because he is a republi
can, or because we are. but because
he is a sober, upright, solid busi
ness man, of whom it can be said
that the office seeks the man and
not the man the office. It is such
mn that cannot but command the
respect and support of i eir fell g
ci tuena.
If St. John can satisfactori'y
explain why he did not come ouc
t Oregon hist fall to labor when
kthe prohibitory amendment was
up, instead of during the presiden
tial year, it might overcome some
serious doubts as to his sincerity
i.i the cause he esDouses.
Let it be remembered that the
desire of voters up this way, al

To be satisfied upon this score,
however, it is but necessary to
consider the difference of the sit
uation now and then. In 1S00
common laborers living in the
rudest sheds, as MacMaster, the
historian, tells us were paid from !
$5 to $6 a month working from
sunrise to sunset. In the city of
Albany, N. Y., wages were 40 cents
a day and men were glad to tind
employment. Yet in those times
clothiag was much higher thnn it
is to-day and a day's wages' bought
only two yards of calicc. vOne
hundred years ago a good farm
hand brought $3 a month and a
strong boy was glad to get $1 a
month to work at the hardest
manual employment on the farm j
or in the shop. Butter was from
8 to 10 cents a pound ; potatoes j
and turnips sold for a shilling a
bushel. Women went but to work i
for 25 cents a month and their
board. A girl who could earn 12
cents at the spinning wheel by a
day's hard work thought she was
doing well. The poor suffered and
there was more want and wretch
edness proportionate to the popu
lation than there is in the TU ui ed
States to-day. To-day the com-
-nest laborer has his dav short-
ened to .fr?m lght en-

is not satisfied with anything lesi

No other race has ever known its
like. It has witnessed transforma
tions surpassing the greatest ot
miracles. It has seen cities spring
up on the prairies and become
agnificeat centers of busings
and population in less than a score
of years. It has seen one of the
o ;t;M nf the world, the
reaicmi -----
yival of the oldest and grandest
.centers of foreign wealth, rise in
jts might at the ocean gateway of
the empire state. What will the
twentieth century see? Will its
restless people be satisfied with
present means of communication
and of intercourse? Will elec
tricity, with its marvelous develop
ment, continue to unfold its weird
.resources and afford the vital en

Is Albany going to celebrate the
Fourth of July this year? If so,
arrangements should be com

The renomination of Binger
Hermann for congress, which will
probably be done by acclamation,
will insure to the people of Oregon
a continuance ot lus eminent sei-
