soft food; boiled goat's flesh and
rice and vegetables were the ''cheif
of his diet." In an evil hour the
men who had to feed the tiger

letting him kill the goats which
were brought for his food, and
this he was easily able to de by a
blow from his huge fore paw's,
though depiived of their claws.
Having thus learned how to kill a
'live being, he unhappily one night
jumped on a small boy who had
come within reach of bia chain, and
with one stroke broke the child's
neck. He was found in the morn
inp; anoarentlv very sorry and
surprised at what he had done.

A curious speculation has been
made concerning what would hap
pen should the earth's rotation
cease. The equatorial diameter
being twenty-six miles nioie than
the polar diameter, the earth would
present an equato-iai zone of solid
ground miles high above sea level,
the water all being drawn to the
ooles. This land zone would then
be like our Arctic regions, and lie
banded by a ring of permanent ice
and snow.
The influence of the moon upon
vegetation is as interesting problen
awaiting solution. A recent writer
upon the subject mentions that
woodcutters in Cape Calony and
India insist that timber is full of 1
sap and unfit to be cut at full
moon. Aneiher observation of
lunar influence in Cape Colony is
rapid spoiling of meats and other
provisions when exposed to moon
light, though this may be due to
J the fact tha the light serves as a
j guide to insects.

Wheatstone, in 1833, seemed to
show a transmission velocity of
183.000 miles a second through
copper wire, but in late experi
ments signals were sent over ordi
nary telegraph wires on poles, and
had" a rate of only 14,000 to 16.000
milcj. With wires near the earth,
the velocity was 12,000 miles, but
reached 24,000 on very high wires.
The Oresou Pacific
The Portland Telegram is re
sponsible for the following. The
Oregon Pacific railway borrowed
115,000,000 la t month to build its
line from Albany to Boise City,
and also some branch lines and
first class steamers. It is rumored
that it is the intention of both the
Chicago & Northwestern and the
Maniloha(Jim Hill) roads to build
to Boise City and there join the
Oregon Pacific, sending their San
Francisco business via Yaquina
bay, and reaching Portland by
fast steamer on the Willamette
troin Albany until they can build
a line through the Molalla, Clacka
mas, and Eagle Creek section to
terminal grounds in East Port
land. It looks like these two
roads were furnishing 'the money
to the Oregon Pacific, and it issur-
raised that U is their iDteutxon to
absorb the narrow gauge system.
This will not oniy furnish a new
outlet for Eastern Oregun, but the
ubicago'& Northwestern and the
Jim Hill roads would thenTiaye
the cream of the Willamette val
ley business. A short line from
Boise City through a rich country
would also tap the Cceur d'Alene
mines.'

Jacob Sharp's Funeral.
New York, April 7. Nothing
definite can be learned as to when .
the funeral of Jacob Sharp will
take place. The family refuse to
give any information on the sub
ject, and even the undertaker in
charge is as ignorant on the matter
as the public. He has merely been
told to have everything in readi
ness to hold the funeral at any
hour he might be called upon. It
is thought that the body will be
taken from the house for burial to
night, the relations hoping thus to
avoid the obtrusion of curiosity
