They Should be Better Protected from
stractive Conflagrations.
Abner Gile and W. D. Fox, of
La Crosse, Wis., are in Portland.
The former is one of the most ex
tensive lumbermen of Wisconsin
and the latter is proprietor of the
noted Cameron house, of La
Crosse. These gentlemen left
home on the 17th of January . and
after a tour through Southern Cal
ifornia came to Oregon.
Mi. Gile is astonished at the
immensity and magnificence of
Oregon forests, and says that in
less than live years there
will be more of a market for
our lumber in the East than. on
the Pacific slope, as the forests of
Wisconsin ami Minnesota are fast
being used up.
j He says there are a number of
Eastern lumbermen in the North-
west who are quietly buying up all
: the timber land they can secure,
j .Mr. Gile is looking about and may
in the future make some invest
I ments.
Forest tires have played havoc
j with our forests and Mr. Gile
j thinks that the laws protecting
forests from the wanton acts of in
! cendiaries should be rigii ly en-
toreetl, as what is already valuaule
i and which will be wortn millions
j of dollars in a few years is often
! thoughtlessly destroyed. He
thinks it should be a matter of
patriotism and public policy to
policy
prevent the destruction of our for
ests by tires. Mr. Gile's criticism
is a pointed one and the matter he
draws attention to is an evil which
is worth giving thought to with a
view to immedia'e abatement, If
the forest burner is permitted to go
on unmolested no one will purchase
timber land, as there will be no
assurance that the trees upon Jt
will not soon b? destroyed bv fire.
I It is n wtAl known i-.u-t that.
J lafge bodies of valuable timber
situated in the Coast range of
; mountains has been destroyed by
j fire. In the Cascades east of
Albany are large quantities of fine
timber, through which the Oregon
Pacific ra.lroad
passes. Saw-mills
1 are beginning to hud a location
j there, and it is to be hoped .he
! wanton lire tiend will not find a
j field of operation in that district.
