Madison and Monroe were plant

lawyer and a statesman, and John
Adams, the father of John Quincy
Adams, was by profession a lawyer,
Grant's father was a tanner,
Hayes' father a merchant, and the
fathers of Garfield, Lincoln, Pierce,

Jackson were farmers. The chances
for the presidency in the past have
thus been with the farmers' boys

WHY IS IT 6V.
Many people think that the tone
of the daily papers are not what
they should be on the subject of
morality and religion. Perhaps j success
A very slimsy ground lor a new

the case of the state against John

the Audrain circuit court. The
motion was sustained and a new
trial granted solely upon the ground
that the jury had been permitted
to read a paper containing an ac
count of the affair, while that
body was trying to reach a verdict.
The prosaic telegraph relates an
incident that establishes the repu

snake that was concealed iu a
crate of Florida cabbage, and the
physician on whom he immedi

Illinois fanners along the Mis-

leading religious events are either
ignored altogether or indifferently
reported? Is it not because news
paper editors have learned that
persons who belong to the theatri
cal or the sporting or the mercan-

see their farms slowly but surely
dropping into the river and going
down with the current to help fill
up the gulf of Mexico.

whereas religious people as such
do not discriminate in their i
patronage of newspapers with a !
corresponding exactness ? In other
words, do religious people feel as
keen an interest in religious news
as the baseball public feels in base
ball news or as the horse racing
public feels in the news of a horse
race? Do religious people to any
considerable degree choose one
paper rather than another because
one paper gives more prominence
to religious news than another or
treats it with a more, sympathetic
apprehension? You can go np
one bench and down another at a
baseball game and every man in
the crowd will tell you what papers
of the next morning will have a
full and glowing account of the
match then in progress, and which
will dismiss it in a fw cold lines,
and very many of them will make
their purchase of a paper on the
following morning on that basis of
chMce. Now apply that mode of
reasoning to religious people. Out of
an audience assembled in a city for
some notable religious occasion
how many will be able to predict
the relative prominence that will
be given to that meeting by the
newspapers? And how many will
o to the newspaer stand the fol
lowing day and buy a paper confi
dent, without looking it through,
that it gives a good account of the
event?"

Glassy Mountain-, South Car
olina, seems to be emulating the
record of some of the Kentucky
outlaw counties. Recently, it is
said, Ben Ross, while reading by
candle light, was shot dead by an
assassin, who spotted him from the
dark. Deputy Marshal Odom a
few days ago made his escape from
the mountain by dashing through
a shower of hail. Now a farmer
named Doc Mills has mysteriously
disappeared, and the only solution
is that he must have been mur
dered. Mills had a neighbor
named Kirkendale. Several nights
ago the two men happened to be at
church together and had to journey
part of the way home together. At
the junction of the mountain paths
they separated. Kirkendale
reached his wife in safety, but
Mills never reached home. Such
records of lawlessness are unpleas
ant blots upon the fair fame of a
neighborhood.
