Mail Chanse.
The ( han 'e in the mail route
from this city to Lebanon, which is
to be made bv the Lebanon branch
of the O. & 0. railroad carrying
mail on the train, seems likely to
leave Tallman out entirely, as the
service by the narrow gauge is un
certain to relie on and is to be dis
continued for that office, and no
orders have been given to leave
the mail from the Lebanon train.
This matter should be looked after

THE ELECTRIC LIGHTS.
The Sew Plant Started I p Last Si;
With Satisfactory ItcMilts.
;ht
The electric lights, which N. II.
Allen has just completed putting
in at this city, were started up
last night with" most satisfactory
results. The plant, which cost
ii a'i ..- Ju. J:ii rru
1JUUU, consists ot two systems
Heisler incandescent lamps. The
whole, it is needless to say, is
driven by water power furnished
from the Santiam canal.
Seventeen c f the large 2000 can:
die power lights were in the cir
cuit last nignt and the streets were
beautifully lighted. The lights
are steady and are powerful, yet
mellow. Persons who have seen
different kinds of electric lights
pronounce them the best they have
ever seen. They are certainly sec
ond to none in Oregon.
The incandescent lights,of which
about 100 were burning, are a fine
indoor light, ranging lr. m 30 to 75
candle power.
The machinery when started up
worked smoothly, and the lights
proved to be all that was expected
Mr. Allen certainly deserves much
credi for the surperior system of
ele trie li,'ht with winch Aibim is
now provided. Beginning with to
mormw night the iiguts will
run a I night.

view of the water power and other
advantages 'afforded here, they
will, if projer encouragement is

given by a prominent business

jettv has been lengthened 400 feet,
and" is now out about 3000 feet.
During this period 22,000 tons of
rock were depositedkin the jetty
tramwav. A further addition of
1200 to the jetty will complete it,
but Captain Polhemus thinks that
an appropriation pf $120,000 is not
sufficient to do the work remaining
to be done. Provided it is, the
work will be finislied by July 1
issy.
No soundings were made at the
close of the season to ascertain the
depth of water on the bar, but that
of last spring showed twenty-one
feet of water at high tide, and a
gratifying increase.
Concearning the proposed jetty
on the north side oi the bay, in
