Westfall, the well known Chinese
contractor of Albany, is about to
begin a suit for heavy damages
against the O. & C. railroad compa
ny for injuru s received in being
ejected from the ladies waiting
room at the depot in Salem by one
of tht e nploj e of the road. " It is
the rule at this depot that no Chi
namen shall be allowed to remain
in the ladies' waiting room. Jim
was asked to go but refused, where

A neat little item of the usual

was furnished yesterday morning
in Will Bros, gun store. A young
man named Geo. Reeves, who
lives across the river in Benton
county, traded for a self-cocking
pistol at the second hand store,
-md was given a cartridge as a
sample., This he placed in the
weapon J and soon afterwards
stepped into Will Bios, gun store
to compare it with a new one. He
had ere this forgot that it was
loaded, and of course alien he
began snapping the hammer to see
how nice a self-cocking revolver
can work, it was discharged. The
voung man got off verv easily, and
was in no wise repaid for his folly.
Dr. Maston cut the ball out and
dressed the mutilated finger. A j
self-cocking revolver was dis

A Srrmus Accident.
From Mr. J. P. Galbraith, who
returned yesterday from Browns
ville, the "particulars were obtained
of a runaway accident which be
fell Mr. James BlAely, an old , i -ueer
oi that place, nearly resulting
in his death. On Saturday last
while driving from a field with a
harroir in his wagon his team ran
away, throwing him out. He fell
upon liis neck and shoulders, and
the fall was so severe that his neck
was almost dislocated. He is about
70 vears of age, and the injury was
consequently quite severe, but at
last accounts he was doing well.
A Mugwump,
Mr. L. M. Herren. of Turner,
has a bird among his barnyard
fowls which he calls a mugwump.
He says it is a veritable cross
between a Chinese, or Mongolian,
pheasant and a chicken. The hen
is fully developed and is now lay
ing eggs. This bird was shipped
by express from this city a few
days since, having been raised
near this city.

few days ago, says the Yacpima
Post,a siwasji named Jake Looney,
probably becoming jealous of his
wife, threw her down and ran a
knife into her side, making a fear
ful wound. The Post's informant
said he thought the woman would
recover; that Jake was under ar
rest, but he did not know what
they intended to do with him.

It is to be a two-story structure 80x

hops in an intensified degree
The habitat, of this valuable
plant is between the Darling and
Lachlan rivers, and it spreads over
an -area of about 250,000 square
miles. Each bush yields on an
average about five pounds of hops,
which hang in clusters all around
the outside of the bush for about
fcur months in the year, and are
fit for plucking during ail that
period. The shepherds use them
for fermenting bread ; the brewer
ies also use them in the fermenta
tion ot beer; a"d a a tonic
bitters.
