The Linn county democratic
convention met at the court house
in this city yesterday at 10 a. m.
The convention was called to order
by W. R. Bilyeu, chairman of the
county central committee. No
time was wasted in speeches, and
after the chairman had stated the
object of the meeting, the conven
tion proceeded at once to business.
On motion of J. L. Cowan, Geo.
E. Chamberlain was eleted tem
porary chairman.
On motion of Sam May the
temporary organization was com
pleted by the election of O. P.
Coshow secretary, and C. J. Shedd
assistant.
A committee of three on cre
dentials was appoined by the

B. R. Morelock an.d L. Senders.
A committee -on permanent or
ganization, consisting of J. L.

some time past correspondence has
been had between the Directors of
the Northwestern Firemen's Asso-j
ciation in regard to the time and
place of holding the next tourna
ment. It has been definitely set
tled that Portland will be the
place, and the time will be between
June 16th and 20th. An effort
will be made to have the tourna
ment f 1883 eclipse all previous
affairs of this kind in the North
west. Teams will probably come
as follows : Seattle wiil send two,
Taconif one, Vancouver one,
Spokane Falls one, "Walla Walla
one, Astoria two, Salem two or
three, Eugene one, Albany two.
East Portland one, Oregon City
one, and Portland will, through
the Volunteer Fireman's Associa
tion, endeavor to put two teams in
the field. The association will
raise a large sum of money and
haog up valuable prizes.

The result of yesterday's nomi
nations by tiie democratic conven
tion was somewhat- of a surprise,
and prominent democrats do not
attempt to conceal the fact that
material was at hand for a much
stronger ticket. Some excellent
men were placed in nomination,
but the ticket is so weighted down
by ot hers who were nominated by
the slaughter of good men
that even staunch democrats were
heard last evening to predict the
defeat of a considerable portion of
it. The forks of the Santiam can
not complain this time of being left
out in the cold, in fact they car
ried away a full share. The only
Albany man nominated for the
county offices is J. J. Whitney for
county judge, and it will be no
ask at all to find a republican
v h can interest him in the 'race
next June.

took a very enjoyable picnic in the
woods in search of the early spring
flowers. Thev showed themselves

wild flowers that adorns our table

One of the amusing jury verdicts
that come to the notice of the pub
lic is that rendered in the Hamlin
case at Grant'? Pass last Thursday.
The verdict was: "We find the de
fendant not guilty; but recommend
that he be severely reprimanded by
the court." The court didn't re
primand the defendant, however,
thinking, no doubt, that it is hard
ly proper to reprove a man for not
being guilty of a crime.
