Several ugly looking snags have
for a long tune been a menace to
steamboats in the Willamette at
various points along the river.
Except at night boats are in no
particular danger from them, for
their jagged ends show from one
to three feet above the surface of
the water", and can easily be
steered clear of. But this will
be the case should there be a
davs of heavv rain, when
not
few
the
river would rise several feet.
The-e snags are w hat are tech
nically known to steamboat men
as "sawyers," that is, they are
held to the bottom of the river by
dirt laden roots, and the broken
tops saw up and down with each
wave of a passing boat. It was
just such a snag as these that the
Oregon Pacific steamer jS S.
Bentiy struck in the upper river,
and went to the bottom before she
reached the shore, should the river
rise the ends of all these"sawyers"
along the river would be under
water, and the danger to boats
would be extreme.
No attempt has been made to
remove theni. Some severe criti
cisms have been made through
the papers because the government
snagboat had not been brought out
and these obstructions to sale nav
igation removed, but, as is often the
case, these criticisms are made by
person? who have no knowledge of
the real facts. The government
snagboat. is laid up, andhere is no
money at hand to put it in order.
It President Cleveland, who is so
worried over the treasury surplus,
had reserved his little pocket veto
of the river and harbor bill, this
work might now be done.

Minnville Reporter, while Chas.
Groening was hauling a load of
wood from Riley smith's, he was
attacked by two men, who jumped
into his wagon, knocked him
down and beat him on the head
very severely. This, is the out
come of a lawsuit. .
Ochoco Review : For some time
past parties in town have been
missing small articles, such as
saddle blankets, chickens, etc., and
suspicion rested on Si Reese, a
worthless fellow who lived in a
dugout near the engine house. The
first of the week his premises were
searched and most of the missing
articles found. Reese was given
an invitation to leave in a hurry,
and he skipped out for other cli
mates without much ceremony.
On the olst of this month we are
to have in Medford a meeting of
the association of Southern Oretron
fruit-growers, says the Transcript, i

the new administration, the policy
that is to actuate the organization
will develop. This meeting ought
to be made a notable one, charac
terized for large attendance ' and
the promptness and ability with
which it takes hold of the many
questions that present.
It appears that Xevius, the
Champoeg school teacher, is not
the victim who jumped off the
bridge Saturday afternoon, as that
worthy went up to Albany that
evening, says a Salem paper. The
most probable theory now known
is that the suicide was a German
who some time back left the home
of his brother-in-law, Mr., Shin J
ler,' in Polk county, declaring he
would commit suicide. He was in
Salem Saturday afternoon, and
called at the Capital national bank
about 4 o'clock, since which time
he has not been seen. The river
has not beei dragged yet.
The Star or Bethlehem.
Great interest has been
aroused lately by the report that
a periodic star called the Star of
Bethlehem has been visible in the
heavens, and the star is said to
have a period of 315 years. This
report rests upon the most,
shadowy foundation. It is true
that some 300 years back such a
star was asserted to have appeared
in Cassiopeia with the period
named, but the observation has
not yet been indorsed by any mod
ern astronomer. But at this time
the name "Star of Bethlehem "has
! been curiously assigned to Venus,
-ich , planet, during the past
December, lias been placed so
favorably for observation that in
tne early morning sky it has form

Albany.
The people of this part of the
country aie very much dissatisfied
with both the democratic and re
publican parties, and it now seems
that quite a number will rally
under third party and endeavor to
to cast their votes for temperance

enjoyed Mr. Hogue's efforts more
than that of Mr.Xast. His local por
traits of a tew of the leading men
of Corvallis, although done with a
few strokes of tue brush, were
recognized before half done and
were greeted with cheers. Mr.
