Oity to Portland, but it has since
been learned that the wrecked
steamer had no masts and had a
pilot house. This is proof that it
was not the government steamer;

. The Oregoniah says Mr. J. M.
Bernhardt, special timber agent,
who lias for some time been in
specting timber'land in Tillamook
county, arrived in Portland Tues
day. He came across the moun
tains on horseback, and reportathe
road, free from snow except about
fifty feet in one place, but there
: are a number of trees across the
track, which is still very muddv,
and no attempt will be mad- to
cross with wagons for six weeks
yet. Mr- Bernhardt was much
surprised to see the great ravages
which have been committed by tire
in timber of the Coast range. He
explored seven townships of tim
ber on the Trask and Wilson
rivers, and from the top of the
range looked away across miles
.and miles of charred stumps reach
ing clear to tlie'Nestilcca. He was
told by an old settler that on ac
count of a quarrel between two
men twenty-five years ago. about
onie rails which one had cut and
which the other claimed were split
toojsmall, the rails were set on fire
and! thev set the forest on fire, and
the outcome was that four town
ships or 144 square miles of timber
was destroyed.

A Small Blaze Which the Prompt Tire Boys
Quickly Extinguished.
Yesterday aftarnoon a fire alarm
was sounded, and before the bell
I had fairly began its ringing three
tire companies were speeding aown
the street toward fire which was
located by the dense columns of
smoke how rising from the roof of
the residence of Chas. and Henry
Miller on First street opposite De
yoe & Eobson's hardware store.
The companies arrived almost sim
ultaneously, and the hooks were
quickly on the roof, while water
was obtained f om the hydrant, fol
lowed by a stream from No. l's
nozzle. Threw streams were soon
playing, and the tire was out.
It originated in the simple, old
fashioned way, from sparks from
th-3 chimnev which caught in tht
moss on the roof. The chimney
bad oui ned out but a half hour be
fore, and particles of burning soot
had evidently smouldered in the
moss until it grew into a blaze.
The building, which was owned
by Dr. Felix O'Toole, was damaged
by the fire and water to the amount
or about $250, and was fully insured.
The damage to the . contents of the
building was nominal, as every
thing was removed.
To the promptness of several cit
izens who were near when the fire
started and did good service witi
buckets was due much credit in as
sisting to quickly suppress the
blaze.

stock Tualatin lake. The request
was referred to Mr. M -Donald, of
the United States fish commission
who reported unfavorably on it.

missioner E. P. Thompson ad
dressed; a. letter to Senator Mitchell
urging him to oppose the introduc
tion into Oregon of any fish foreign
to its waters until it can be de
ermined whether the auie fish
would be. detrimental to. present
fishing interests. He argued par
ticularly, against the catfish on tlie
ground' that it -'is a great spawn
eater, and it the streams west of
trie Cascade mountains which are

L. L. Judson killed a large iack
rabbit the other day on the farm
yf, Cooper .Turner ,iiar this city.
It was a genuine jack raboit, simi
lar to those on the bunch grass
plains of Eastern Oregon, except
that it had webfeet. It is quite
a rarity to find a jack rabbit, run
ning wild in these parts... T'dsone
seemed perfectly at home, and had
evidently been here long enough
to become acclimated.

A team attached to Dr. Mc
Alister's buggy became frightened
at a passing truck, 'and broke loose
from a hitching post on Broadalbin
street yesterday, succeeding in de
stroying the buggy. They dashed
up First street and turned up
Ferry ttreet, dragging the bugey
bottomside up. They were stopped
near the college, the buggy being
a wreck. No one was in the buggy
and no pite was hnrt.
