Salmon to
Guarded.
be Sufficiently
The efforts of the governor and
fishery cornmissidh are having good
effect, and even the takiag of Steel
head salmon has been suppressed
during the close season. The fol
lowing from the News relates to
the fishery matter :
"Yesterday United States Fish
Commissioner Livingstone Stone
returned from a two weeks' ins pec
tion of the Deschutes, John Days,
Yakima and other branches of the
upper Columbia river, with a view
to learn their fitness for the prop
agation of salmon. He found a
number of streams which are suit
ed for the taking and propagation
of salmon eggs. Besides this the
country in this vicinity is traversed
by railroads, thus affording the
necessary transportation facilities
to and from the proposed site of
the hatchery. Commissioner
Stone is well pleased with the re
sult of his investigation. So it may
not be long before a hatchery wi 1
be located on one of the branches
of the upper Columbia. Just at
what point this will be has not yet
been determined.
Commissioner Stone was elated
when he learned that an agree
ment had been reached whereby
the Clackamas hatchery is to he
turned over to the care of the
United States Fisheries Commis
sion. Commissioner Stone and
other state fish commissioners will
hold a conference in a few davs to
determine the time when he" will
take charge of the hatchery.
Fish Commissioner Thompson
recently interviewed Superintend
ent Shelby, of Well. Far no & Co.,
and asked him if he would uot co
operate with the commission in an
endeavor to have the fish law en
forced bv refusing to carry salmon
caught during the close season.
Mr. nhelby replied that if a letter
was written to him he would bring
the matter to the attention of the
managers of the c-mpanv, and he
felt sure that thev would co-oper
ate. The letter will be written and
forwarded immediately.
