EDITORIAL NOTES.
Gen. Phil Sheridan, talked of
mildly for presidential nominee, is
a farmer of Yamhill county, atai.y
rate he owns a farm down there.
Republican primaries will be
held on Marc h 31st and the county
convention April 4th. The state
convention convenes in Porthu.d
on April 11th.
Commercial travelers, and tl e
much berate I drummers, who, are
on the whole pretty shrewd and
ebserving citizens, say that Al
bany is the liveliest city in the
"Willamette vallev.
The managers of the Utans
Yallev, California, Eureka mine,
in building their new powder hou-e
will probably remember thatjtion of such publications
powder stored in a room where
stoves are kept running is not ex-j
actly .safe. The demolition their I
old house by the recent powder
explosion will give them a hint of
that nature.
The democrats tired the first sun i
of the campaign yesterdav at their !
primary meetings, at which dele-!

were elected and precinct nomina

Irish, of the, Alta, has a happy
'way of hitting tiilng-i s piarely and
fairly when he alludes co non
political subjects. In relation to a
recent article, in which Dr. Ham
mond says that man should live
always, and would never die if he
kept in line with the laws of his
being, he says: "Dr. Hammond
is getting cranky. No created or
ganism is immortal. 'The beasts
that perish,' in a state of nature
have a chance to live up to the
law of their existence, and they
die finally of the subsidence of
life within them. There is no evi

the rule. It he live forever, there j

globe would become in a single
century so crowded by human
beings that a sentence to an eter
nity of physicai existence would
be the essence of cruelty."
California enterprise is pro
verbial. The latest relates to
prison work. It is said that at
San Quentin is to be tried an ex
periment which wiil lie followed
with interest by prison managers
all over the country. Instead of
duplicating the jute machinery
the prison directors propose to run
the jute mill, as many private
manufacturing enterprises are, by
dividing the prisoners into day and
night shifts and keeping the looms
and jennies in operation for twenty
four hours eacii working day. To
do this, electric lights have been
provided and necessary arrange
ments made for the proper guard
ing and control of the prisoners.
It is a distinctive California idea,
and its success will work a revolu
tion in the industrial operations of
verv nsnitentiarv in the country

TEMPERANCE K0TES.
Contributed by the V. U. T. U.
Dubuque, Iowa, brewers and
liquor dealers have just incorpo
rated a personal liberty association
which has for some of its objects :
obtaining information concerning
the working of prohibitory laws in
various states; to work for their
repeal or modification; to secure
compensation ; to aid its members
in defending their rights of person
or property, and to obtain an en
actment of a license law in Iowa.
Some enterprising temperance
men have founded what they call
the Fairmount temperance colony
m Los Angeles county, California.
They have purchased the Antelope
valley, laid it out in lots of five,
ten and twenty acres, and ofier the
lots to temperance, moral settlers
none other need apply on favor
able terms. All deeds contain the
clause, "forever prohibiting the
sale of intoxicants on the prem
ises." They make raisin grapes a
specialty.
Mrs. Marj- B. Keese, whom v
all remember with pleasure, has
recently been called upon to part
with a beloved daughter. Mrs.
Keese came to this coast, hoping a
change would benefit her daughter,
who had been in delicate health
for some time. The change did
not prove beneficial. The many
friends who were drawn to the
kind motherly woman during her
'short stay imong us, will deeply
sympathize with her in this great
attlu-tior.
Kev. Wallace J. Gladwin, mis
sionary in India, writes a to'iriiirg
letter to the New York Advocate,
on the introduction by English
people of alcoholics among non
Christian nations. He says:
"Drinking customs have gained a
terrible hold upon the educated
classes, and the use of strong drink
is growing greatly among the
masses in the large cities, in the
! towns and in the villages all ovei
India." He closes his appeal by J
submitting the following plan, I
which we hope some of our white
ribbon women, and those inter-j
ested in the cause, will heed: "To

whose labors have not been other-1
